William Smith stands strong at home to beat Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y.—William Smith College sophomore Stella Davis scored a game-high 17 points, but Ithaca College defended its home court 60-48 in Liberty League women’s basketball action.

Davis shot 5-of-11 from the floor with a 3-pointer and made all six of her free throws. She also grabbed four rebounds, handed out a team-high three assists and made a team-high two steals. Classmate Olivia Parisi joined Davis in double digits with 10 points and six boards. First-year Lauren DeVaney and senior Emma Gallagher led the Herons to a draw on the glass with seven rebounds apiece. William Smith and Ithaca both collected 42 caroms in the contest.

Ithaca put three players in double digits led by KallyAnne O’Reilly’s 14-point game. Lindsey Albertelli and Megan Yawman added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Cassidy O’Malley had nine points and a game-high eight rebounds.

The Bombers (7-3, 4-0) shot 38 percent from the floor while limiting the Herons (7-4, 3-1) to 26 percent shooting. The game turned in the second quarter, when William Smith missed all nine of its shots from the field, managing just five points in the frame, all at the line. The Herons trailed by just four with three minutes to go in the half, but Ithaca went into halftime on a 10-0 run.

William Smith was able to close the gap to nine with about two and a half minutes to go in the third quarter, but Ithaca finished the frame on a 9-3 run to carry a 49-34 lead into the fourth quarter. Trailing by 15 two minutes into the fourth, William Smith rattled off eight straight points to make it a seven-point game with under five minutes remaining. However, the Herons could get no closer.

The loss was the Herons’ first on the road this season. William Smith had won seven in a row outside of Bristol Gym.

The Herons will wrap up their four-game road trip Tuesday, Jan. 14, when they visit Union (4-6, 1-3). Tipoff in Schenectady is at 5:30 p.m.
