SYRACUSE, N.Y. – At the end of the first quarter, the Fairport girls’ basketball team looked as though it was going to be in another fast-paced, back and forth game. However, when the final buzzer sounded, it dropped its second game in two days, this time to Norwich. The Purple Tornadoes came away with a 67-51 win.
In the consolation game of the More Than A Game Foundation Group 3 bracket, Fairport fell behind in the second quarter due to an 11-point frame from Norwich’s Sydney Coggins. After one, the Red Raiders were behind by just one point, but trailed by 14 at the break.
The lead continued to balloon in the third, reaching as much as 23 points. However, despite being down by 22 at the end of the third, Fairport did not give up and made one last run at it in the final eight minutes.
A run led by freshman Ella Meabon, freshman Bella Pucci, senior Kat Zimmerman and senior Alexandra Kehrig got the Red Raiders to as close as 15, but not close enough to put too much of a scare into the Purple Tornadoes. Norwich got the lead back to 19 before both squads took its starters out of the game.
Coggins and Abby Flynn led Norwich with 18 points apiece. Margaret Dougher also went into double figures, netting 12 points. Abby Hansen (8), Mackenzie Hess (7) and Emily Evans (4) made up the rest of the scoring for the Purple Tornadoes.
Meabon led Fairport with 17 points and Pucci pitched in 10. Zimmerman and Kehrig added quality secondary scoring with nine and five points, respectively. Riley DeRue (2) and Maci Ostrander (2) also found the scorebook for the Red Raiders.
Fairport’s next game will be on Jan. 7 when it travels to Pittsford Mendon.
