Matt Caggiano paced Victor to three wins in opening week. Andrew Mason was a threat all over the floor in a pair of Webster Thomas wins. Ben DiGiovanni averaged over 20 points for Pittsford Sutherland. Honeoye Falls-Lima’ Patrick Lustyk opened his season with 50 points. Monroe County coaches recognized the quartet is recognized as Players of the Week for their respective division for the 2019-2020 opening week.
Caggiano averaged 14 points, 4.3 assists and 4.0 rebounds in the Blue Devils three wins to earn Monroe County Division I Player of the Week (POTW). The senior guard started the season with 19 points as Victor began divisional play with a 63-50 win over Rush-Henrietta. He scored seven in a 33-point win to open the Finger Lakes Tip Off Tournament and followed that with a 14-point performance in the championship game to earn tournament MVP. For the week, he hit seven of 11 attempts from behind the arc. Victor travels to Fairport for a &:30 PM tip off on Friday.
Mason played a key role as Webster Thomas claimed the Al Masino Tip-Off Tournament and was named Monroe County DII POTW. . The tournament MVP. connected on 13 of 26 field goal attempts including 10 of 18 three-point shots in the two games. Thomas defeated Churchville-Chili 64-63 in its season opener. In the one-point victory, Mason finished with a double-double, scoring 19 points, five from the field and three from beyond the arc and grabbed ten rebounds. Against host Eastridge in the tournament final, he finished with 31 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists. He went 8-for-8 at the free throw line and 7-of-10 from long range. The Titans are back in action at Hilton on Wednesday, December 11 at 7:15 p.m.
DiGiovanni averaged 22 points, five assists, and three steals in both Pittsford Sutherland wins to grab Monroe County DIII honors. The six-foot-four senior drained 18 points in the Knights’ 30-point victory over Brighton. He followed up his double-digit performance with a career-high 26 points against Wilson Magnet. He racked up 12 points by the half and connected nine times from the floor throughout his career night. Pittsford Sutherland is set to face Brockport at home on Thursday, December 18 with a 7 p.m. tip.
Lustyk put up dazzling numbers for Honeoye Falls-Lima, combining for 50 points in the first week to garner Division IV’s top spot. The junior scored 27 of his team’s 65 points in their opening night loss to Leadership. He also pulled down seven rebounds. He then led the Cougars to a bounce back win over Batavia with a double-double on 23 points and ten rebounds. Ten of those points were scored at the line. Lustyk and the Cougars travel to Brockport on Monday, December 9.
