ROCHESTER, NY — Sophomore guard Curtis Nesbit (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge) tallied a career-high 28 points as the RIT (1-0) men’s basketball team defeated Wells College (0-3) 79-70 in the season opener from Clark Gymnasium Tuesday evening.
Nesbitt shot 9-of-13 from the floor, including 7-of-9 from beyond the arc, adding four assists, four rebounds and a steal. Michael Young (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth Regional) tallied 11 points and nine rebounds, while Cobey Adekanbi (Bloomfield, CT/Loomis Chafee) led the Tigers with 16 boards.
Jalen Tribble led Wells with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Ty McBride finished with 16 points, while Zach D’Arpino chipped in 12 points for the Express who shot 36.4 percent from the floor.
Trailing 28-27 at halftime, RIT outscored Wells 52-32 in the second half, draining 10-of-15 three-pointers. McBride gave Wells a 56-53 lead on his layup with 9:02 to play. The Tigers responded with a 14-4 run, taking a 67-60 lead on a three-pointer from Nesbit with 5:27 to play.
A pair of Young free throws gave the Tigers a 72-62 lead, their largest lead of the game, with 3:49 remaining. McBride cut the RIT lead to 73-68 on his jumper with 1:40 to play. Anderson capped off the win with a pair of free throws with :14 seconds to play.
RIT shot 39.7 percent from the floor on 27-of-68 shooting. The Tigers out-rebounded Wells, 46-37 and made 12-of-27 from beyond the arc, and went 13-of-19 from the foul line. Wells shot 36.4 percent from the floor and made just 7-of-27 from beyond the arc.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 16, when the Tigers host D’Youville College at 3 p.m. on the floor of Clark Gymnasium.
