BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Roberts Wesleyan women’s soccer team snapped the defending NCAA Division II national champion’s 20 game home win streak on Saturday, defeating the University of Bridgeport 2-1.
After a scoreless first half, the action was packed into seven minutes of the second half where a pass from Israela Groves to Julia Doriski who sent it through two Bridgeport defenders and sunk in the back of the net that gave the Redhawks the 1-0 lead.
Bridgeport answered with a goal at the 66th minute bringing the game to 1-1. A little over a minute and a half later, Groves scored the game winner from the top of the box with a goal assisted by Sydney Regan.
While the Knights outshot Roberts 10-3 they were unable to get past senior goalkeeper Kelsey Brinkel (Aquinas) who saw nine saves during the game. Brinkel ultimately kept the game from being tied up 2-2 and sending the Redhawks into overtime when she saved a last minute penalty kick by Bridgeport’s Valentina Florez.
The women’s soccer team ended on a high note defeating Bridgeport for the first time in program history finishing the season 9-5-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the ECC.
