MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College football team was on the wrong side of a 49-13 decision on Saturday as the Cardinals fell to Morrisville State on the road in an Empire 8 clash inside Drake Stadium. With the defeat, Fisher slipped below .500 and closed out the day at 4-5 overall and 1-4 in the Empire 8 while the Mustangs improved to 5-4, 3-2, respectively.
Freshman quarterback Hunter Walsh (McQuaid) was 8-for-21 with two touchdowns and five interceptions on the day. Overall, the Rochester native hit four different receivers led by Pat Galer who finished with three catches for 39 yards and a touchdown while Johnathan Letta (Hilton) hauled in three receptions for 31 yards and a score. Will Blake (Webster Schroeder) added one catch for 32 yards while Ryan Ingerson caught one pass out of the backfield for 27 yards.
After falling behind by three touchdowns through one quarter of play, the Cardinals got on the board with a 5-play, 65-yard drive capped off by a 21-yard touchdown pass from Walsh to Letta to make it 21-6. From there, the host Mustangs reeled off three more touchdown drives in the second quarter to open up a 42-6 cushion at halftime.
Coming out of the break, Fisher cut the deficit to 29 points when Galer caught a five-yard pass from Walsh to close out a 9-play, 68 yard drive that ate up nearly five minutes of clock and made it 42-13 before a final touchdown by the Mustangs closed out the conference contest.
Defensively, Jason Rodriguez led the Cardinals with 12 tackles while Cameron Bellino finished with 11 stops on the day. Justin Wheeler added 10 tackles including a sack while Evan Strassberger had six on the day to go along with two pass breakups.
The Cardinals will close out their season at 1 p.m. next Saturday when they host the Alfred University Saxons in Growney Stadium. The game will also coincide with Senior Day as the team will honor its seniors prior to kickoff.
