GENESEO, N.Y. — Sophomore Adoniadis Savidis (Gates-Chili) scored the equalizing goal with less than 20 minutes to play in regulation Tuesday as visiting Nazareth rallied for a 2-2 non-conference tie in men’s soccer action.
The Golden Flyers extended their unbeaten streak to nine games (6-0-3) and improved to 10-2-3 overall. Geneseo is 6-8-2.
Nazareth led 1-0 at halftime, then watched the Knights score twice within a 14-minute stretch in the second half to take a 2-1 advantage.
Savidis’ goal came in the 72nd minute after a shot by Jake Adams was turned aside by Geneseo keeper Liam Dole, who finished with seven saves. Savidis was able to outrace a Geneseo defender to the rebound and scored for the second time this season.
With the score tied 2-2 after 90 minutes of regulation, two 10-minute overtime periods followed, but neither team could generate a goal. Geneseo had the best chance in the first overtime but a shot by Eren Aydin ricocheted off the cross bar.
Savidis also was largely responsible for Nazareth’s first goal, which was officially classified as an own goal. A cross into the box in the 29th minute glanced off the foot of a Geneseo defender before settling into the goal.
Geneseo tied the score early in he second half as Caleb Murty converted a penalty kick following a Nazareth foul in the penalty area. The second goal came off the foot of Ben Licht.
Junior Josh McNutt made his first start of the season in goal for the Golden Flyers and made five saves.
Nazareth returns to Empire 8 Conference play Saturday with a home game against Houghton at 1 p.m.
