UR blown out as Alfred offense rolls

ALFRED, N.Y. – Alfred University put together three straight touchdown drives in the third quarter to burst ahead, 42-13, enroute to a 56-13 win over the University of Rochester at Yunevich Stadium on the Southern Tier.

The Saxons (3-1) compiled 588 yards in total offense – 406 on the ground and 182 through the air. AU ran for six TDs – three by Aaron Griffin (18 carries, 229 net yards), one each by Kevin Bragaglia, Will Coats, and Caleb Rinko. Casey Boston completed 13 of 19 passes for 162 yards and two TDs – both in the second quarter. He found Eric Staniszewski for a 19-yard TD that put Alfred in front to stay, 14-10, with 9:31 left in the period. Then he threw an eight-yard TD to Zach Leinenbach 3:18 before halftime for a 21-10 lead.

Rochester led twice, both times in the first half. Ryan Eamer capped a six-play, 45-yard drive with an eight-yard TD pass to Noah Shinaman (Brighton) with 4:18 left in the first quarter. Dawson Klinger added the PAT. Alfred tied it immediately. On the first play from scrimmage after the kickoff, Griffin broke away for an 80-yard TD. Dustin McCaslin’s PAT evened the score.

Early in the second quarter, Boston’s pass was intercepted by UR’s Deon Willis and returned 12 yards to the 29. When they Yellowjackets couldn’t move any closer, Klinger kicked his 40-yard field goal, a career long.

Boston directed two TD drives – a five-play, 51-yarder ending in the scoring pass to Staniszewski and a nine-play, 70 yard drive climaxed y the TD pass to Leinenbach. Near the end of the half, Eamer drove Rochester 52 yards in 12 plays, helped by two penalties against the Saxons. Klinger kicked his 30-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 21-13 heading into the locker room.

Statistically for Rochester, Eamer was 13-23 for 127 yards and one TD. Derek Bufano played in the second hal f(4-9, 33 yards). Dan Diaz (37 yds.) and Justin Daul (22 yds.) caught four passes apiece. Shinaman (30 yds.) and Tyler Tanen (22 yds.) had three receptions. Jason Cunningham (Brighton) rushed 19 times for a net of 48 yards.

Defensively, Caden Cole had 10 tackles, Robert Grant, Willis, and Nick Petruzziello had seven each.
