ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Sam Smyth (Rush-Henrietta) scored in the second half to tie the game with Ithaca but the Bombers answered with less than 25 minutes to play to regain the lead and held on for the 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Golden Flyer Stadium.
Ithaca (5-1), ranked #12 in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, scored first with a goal in the 28th minute off a rebounded shot and save by senior goalkeeper Brian Wilkin (Hilton) for the first half lead.
Early in the second half, Smyth put Nazareth (4-2) on the board as he took a long pass and dribbled past two defenders before firing a shot into the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1 just five minutes into the second half.
In the 68th minute, Ithaca’s Theo Scott took a long pass in the box and made a couple moves to open up space and scored into the lower corner of the net to regain the lead for the Bombers.
Ithaca held an 11-2 edge in shots in the opening half but only had a 10-8 advantage in the second half of play. Wilkin was credited with seven saves and successfully defended 11 Ithaca corner kicks.
The Golden Flyers return to action Tuesday night with a 7 pm non-conference game at Morrisville and will open Empire 8 play at home against Alfred next Saturday.
