ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Sophomore Ashley Plane (Aquinas) scored her second goal of the season in the 55th minute Saturday to lift host Nazareth to a 1-0 non-conference women’s soccer victory over Ithaca at Golden Flyer Stadium.

Nazareth improved to 4-1 overall, while Ithaca dropped to 3-2-1.

Former Empire 8 Conference rivals, Nazareth and Ithaca were meeting for the 41st time in women’s soccer. It was only the ninth time that Nazareth has come away victorious. Twelve of those games ended in a tie.

The Bombers held the better of the play for the first 45 minutes, generating 10 shots to Nazareth’s three. The Golden Flyers, however, were able to pick up the pace in the second half, generating several chances before Plane finally broke through.

An initial shot by freshman Danielle Christ was saved by Ithaca’s Sara Jakobsze. She also was able to get a hand on a rebound attempt by Plane. The ball remained loose in front of the goal and Plane was finally able to tap it in for the game’s lone goal.

Nazareth had another chance about five minutes later, but a blast by Christ from about 15 yards out clanged off the crossbar.

Ithaca finished with an 18-15 edge in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalie Hannah Miller had 10 saves for the Golden Flyers for her second shutout of the season and 18th of her career.

The Golden Flyers have another tough non-conference challenge coming up Wednesday at Geneseo at 7 p.m.
