PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Rochester assembled a well-coordinated defensive presence on Sunday afternoon to post a 1-0 victory over SUNY Cortland in a women’s soccer match at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
The win gives the Yellowjackets a 3-1 overall record and is Rochester’s second victory in the past five days. Cortland is 1-2. The Red Dragons won their opener against Sage College, then lost to Misericordia University.
Carolyn Richards scored the game’s only goal, this coming in the 11th minute. In midweek, she had a goal and an assist in a victory over Keuka College.
After conceding the goal, Cortland pressured Rochester trying to launch counterattacks. The only Cortland shot came in the 34th minute when Emily Hinck headed the ball wide left after a cross. Nine minutes before the halftime whistle, Ro Hernandez pushed a low pass to Sabrina Rodrigues near the penalty spot. As Rodrigues maneuvered for shooting space, Rochester’s Giuliana Vasile (Pittsford Sutherland) cleared the ball out of the box.
Both teams missed chances to connect early in the second half. Jaden Galluzzo of Cortland ran onto a ball in the box but put her shot over the crossbar. A minute later, Richards evaded the defense and shot, but it, too, went over the bar.
On back-to-back shots, Rochester defenders denied Cortland an equalizer. With 15 minutes gone, Galluzzo got past Rochester goalkeeper Emma Schechter at the edge of the box. She tried to roll the ball into the open net, but Joanna Guay kicked it over the endline for a corner kick.
On the corner, the ball found Alannah O’Shea in the middle of the box. Her shot through traffic was cleared off the line by Meghan Martin at the left post.
UR was able to counter with Cortland pressing in search of a tying goal. Jamison Seabury, Jorie Freitag, and Richards were the primary people, getting outlet passes from teammates or running them down in open space and then carving towards goal. Midway through the second half, Emily Henry swerved a corner kick into the area and Freitag’s header for the top left corner sailed just high. Five minutes later, Freitag chipped it from the right endline into the middle and Robin de Jong headed it high.
Torrie Welch cleared the ball away from Hernandez in the 86th minute, but gave up a corner. On the ensuing play, Bryn Thompson found Hernandez in the box but her shot skipped past the post.
The Rochester goal, scored in the 11th minute, came after a nice solo run by Richards. She collected the ball in the middle of the pitch and ran to her left to pull wide of defenders. She turned quickly into the area, then shot the ball past Danika Svendsen inside the near left post.
Svendsen made one save for the Red Dragons. Schechter had one save as well to accompany the team saves by Guay and Martin.
