CAPITAL CITY REDS 6
MONARCHS 2
Ryan Burnside and Tucker Criswell drove in a run apiece in the first inning to kick off Capital City’s scoring. Burnside knocked in Michael Morgan while Criswell scored Ethan Hunt.
The Reds wound up scoring all six of their runs in the first four innings of the game. Hunt delivered two runs in the second on a double that plated Morgan and Jeremie Goyer. Kayne Mcgee scored Capital City’s lone run in the third inning on a wild pitch. The final run the Reds scored was in the fourth on another single by Criswell.
The Monarchs put together a small comeback effort in the sixth, with Tyler Griggs (Connecticut) and Dylan Broderick both driving in a run to cut the deficit to four. Noah Camponelli (St. John Fisher), Broderick and Tyler Holmes (Hartford) collected the only three hits for the Monarchs.
For all their scoring on the day, Morgan, Hunt, Burnside and Criswell recorded all of the Reds’ five hits on the day. Capital City’s starting pitcher, Ashton Holdridge, did not need much more help. Holdridge threw five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and surrendering three walks. The most impressive part of his big day was that 11 of the 15 outs he recorded were via a strikeout.
After the Reds already had the lead in hand, Marty Williams came on and struck out three over three scoreless innings. Williams walked one and gave up one hit.
FLYIN’ FISH 3
CAPITAL CITY REDS 4
JR Malinoski drove in Ryan Burnside on a walk-off fielder’s choice to give Capital City a sweep on the day. Malinoski’s RBI ended the game after the Flyin’ Fish tied it up in the top of the seventh inning.
Zachary Carpin (Clarkson) continued his hot summer with a clutch RBI single to knot the score at three in the seventh. The hit was Carpin’s third of the day and raised his batting average on the season to .324.
The scoring was started in the fourth inning when Anthony Maschewske (Keuka) knocked in Carpin to give the Flyin’ Fish a 1-0 lead.
The lead only lasted until the bottom of the fifth when the Reds threw up a three-spot. Michael Morgan, Ryan Burnside and Tyler Criswell all drove in one run in the frame to put Capital City ahead 3-1.
Justin LoTemple (Alfred State) brought his team within one run in the top of the sixth. He did not get credit for an RBI but Cody Cooper (Slippery Rock) scored on a 6-4-3 double play. That set up Carpin’s and Malinoski’s heroics.
Chris Butler (Keuka) got the start for the Flyin’ Fish and allowed there runs on six hits over five innings. Drew Delaney (Slippery Rock) relieved him for 1.2 innings and took the loss despite not allowing an earned run.
Jeremie Goyer was handed the ball for the Reds and threw four innings, surrendering one run and four hits while also tallying four strikeouts. Ashton Holdridge, the winning pitcher in the first game of the day, also got the win in the second game. He threw just 0.2 innings, but both of his outs were on strikeouts. 13 of the 17 outs Holdridge recorded on the day were punch outs.
