ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Willians Astudillo homered for the third time in as many games, but it wasn’t enough as the Rochester Red Wings fell to the Columbus Clippers, 3-2 Wednesday night at Frontier Field.
The loss snapped the Wings eight-game winning streak.
Astudillo connected on a first-pitch offering from Columbus starter Mitch Talbot to give Rochester a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The run was the only one allowed by Talbot who struck out five over 6.2 innings to pick up his first win of the season.
Wings starter Lewis Thorpe fanned nine and walked two over five scoreless innings. The southpaw left the game with the lead.
Bobby Bradley‘s two-out, two run home run in the sixth off Wings reliever DJ Baxendale gave Columbus a lead it did not surrender. Brandon Barnes added a solo shot in the eighth for what proved to be the winning run.
Rochester (28-34) outhit Columbus (37-27), 7-4 with Gordon finishing 2-for-4 on the night.
Astudillo has nine hits in 16 at-bats since his recent demotion by the Minnesota Twins. “El Tortuga” has six RBI and three runs scored.
Rochester’s win streak was its longest since 2006.
The teams will close the three-game set with a 12:35 PM start on Thursday.
