CAPITAL CITY REDS 3
MONARCHS 0
Derek Zwolinski picked up his second win in two days as he threw a complete game shutout for the Capital City Reds, only allowing two batters to reach base for the opposing Monarchs. The bottom of the seventh featured the Monarchs’ best chance of finding the scoreboard but was shut down by Zwolinski, who had only given up two hits to that point. Opening with a second strikeout of shortstop Shane Hake (Elmira), Frankie Santiago was able to reach base on catcher interference and steal his way to third. With a man on third and first following a two-out walk, Zwolinski struck out his seventh of the game to hand the Monarchs a loss. The CC Reds scored all three of their runs in the fifth using a two-run, two-out triple from catcher Ryan Burnside who later scored on a passed ball. Michael Morgan finished with two hits while Tucker Criswell, Kayne McGee and Junior Malinoski each had one for the CC Reds. Ryan Hill (Monroe CC) was the only Monarch to figure out Zwolinski, singling in both of his at bats. Tyler Smith pitched four innings, struck out four and earned the loss despite all three runs coming unearned. Trevor Povlock (RIT) closed out the final three innings in the game giving up just two hits and two walks while striking out three.

The second game of the Capital City Reds’ doubleheader against the Flyin’ Fish consisted of similar lights-out pitching and an even hotter offense. Pitcher Branden Voytko challenged Derek Zwolinski’s performance in the first game against the Monarchs by striking out eight over six-shutout-innings, and Troy Clarke closed out the final inning with two strikeouts. Michael Morgan registered his third straight multi-hit game to open the season, going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and a stolen base. David Ezra, Jeremie Goyer and Tucker Criswell all finished with hits for the CC Reds as well. The Flyin’ Fish finished with six hits, all of them for singles.
