WOOSTER, OH – The University of Rochester baseball team dropped its winners bracket contest to Case Western Reserve University by an 11-0 score on Saturday afternoon at Wooster’s Art Murray Field in the NCAA Division III Tournament regionals.
Rochester (29-16) now will have to battle back through the losers bracket, much like last weekends Liberty League Tournament. The Spartans improve to 24-13 on the season and are one win away from capturing the regional title.
Case Western Reserve got a complete game shutout from sophomore right-hander Matt Levine, with the Yellowjackets only mustering six hits in the contest. Levine needed 111 pitches to complete the game, allowed just one walk and struck out five in the victory, his sixth of the season.
The Spartans were able to get on the board first in the top of the opening inning. Tyler Wypiszenski singled up the middle scoring leadoff hitter Rocco Maue, and then eventually came around to score on a passed ball. After one, CWRU led 2-0.
In the bottom of the inning, Rende reached on a one-out error, but Levine erased that quickly on a double-play ball from the next hitter.
Case Western Reserve added three more runs off of starter Garrett Renslow in the third, boosting the lead to 5-0. Wypiszenski drove in Maue again with a ground out, Casey McConihe added a sac fly and Benjamin Stawicki completed the frame with an RBI single.
Meanwhile, Levine kept rolling on the mound for the Spartans. Rochester failed to have a runner reach second base until the eighth inning when the lead was 10-0 Case Western Reserve.
In the eighth, Hertz singled to right and Sy followed with a double to left, putting runners on second and third with two outs. Levine was able to keep Rochester off the scoreboard though, getting Kyle Trombley to fly out to right.
Rochester’s ninth inning saw Rende and Finch leadoff the frame with back-to-back singles, but that’s all UR would get as Levine got three straight outs for the shutout.
Maue led the Spartans with a 3-for-5 day at the plate with 3 runs, 3 RBI and a home run. Jacob Kucia was 4-for-6 with two runs, while McConihe and Stawicki each went 2-for 3.
On the mound for Rochester, Renslow took the loss, yielding 6 hits, 5 runs (4 earned) and 1 walk in 2.2 innings. Kevin Horelieved and went four innings and gave up six hits and three runs. Dan Agate and Trevor Van Allen finished out the game for the Yellowjackets.
Rochester will now take on host Wooster in the second elimination game of the day on Saturday at 3:30 pm. The top-seeded Fighting Scots defeated Otterbein 13-3 in an 8:30 am contest to stay alive. The winner of that contest will advance to the regional championship on Sunday.
