RIT fights through rain, Clarkson for walk-off split

POTSDAM, NY – The RIT baseball team (12-12, 7-5 Liberty League) beat the rain and earned a hard-fought doubleheader split at Clarkson University (13-11, 9-3 Liberty League) on Sunday from Jack Phillips Stadium. RIT rallied from a 3-1 deficit and won 6-3 on a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning by Patrick Blackall (Hershey, PA/Hershey) in game one. Clarkson let a 7-1 lead slip away before scoring six times in the top of the ninth inning to take game two, 14-9.

In game one, the two teams traded runs in the first inning, before Clarkson took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Brad Pearson. RIT would get the two runs right back in the bottom half of the inning, as Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) slammed a two-run double to right field.

Navada Waterman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) led off the bottom of the seventh inning by lacing a single to right field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem). After an intentional walk and a strikeout, Blackall stepped up and crushed a three-run homer to center field for his team-best fourth round-tripper of the season to give RIT the key win.

RIT out-hit Clarkson, 9-4. Joey Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a walk and run batted in. Waterman also had two hits. Zeglen gave up four hits and three runs, all unearned and struck out a pair of batters in six innings. Jon Opalewski (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn his third win of the season.

Clarkson jumped out to a 7-1 lead in game two before RIT roared back to tie the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-run triple by Blackall. The Golden Knights would put up six runs in the top of the ninth inning to pick up the win.

Clarkson out-hit RIT, 18-14, as rain fell throughout. Six different Golden Knights had multiple-hit games. Mike Tito, Pearson and Mike Nee had three hits apiece. Nee scored three times and drove in two runs, while Caleb Doyle and Nolan Duda drove in three runs each. Duda put the game away with a bases-clearing double in the top of the ninth inning.

Clarkson used five different pitchers. Ryan Riley picked up his fifth win of the season in relief.

Blackall led RIT by going 3-for-5 with a triple and four RBIs. Capra was 3-for-6 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Kyle Watson (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) added three hits, a run scored and RBI. Joey Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) reached base four times, with two hits and two walks.

Yesterday, RIT and Clarkson also split a doubleheader, with the Golden Knights taking game one, 5-1 and Tigers earning a 12-7 victory in game two. Clarkson remains atop the Liberty League standings, while the Tigers fell into a tie for third.

RIT is back in action on Wednesday, April 17 with a non-conference contest at Hamilton College. First pitch will be at 4:15 p.m.
