Yellowjackets back to field with doubleheader sweep

CANTON, N.Y. – After almost a week off, the University of Rochester baseball team returned to action, heading north to play St. Lawrence University in a conference doubleheader. Rochester entered the weekend an even 12-12 overall and 6-6 in conference play.

The Yellowjackets would take the first game by a final of 5-2. Garrett Renslow picked up his second win of the season, pitching 6 innings, striking out 6, and only allowing 2 earned runs.

GAME 1: UR 5 SLU 2

Rochester got off to an early lead in game one, scoring three runs in the top of the first. With the bases loaded and only one out, Steve Pickering grounded out to the pitcher, allowing David Rieth to score and give UR a 1-0 lead. On the very next batter, Jack Herman singled through the left side, scoring both Jacob Matzat and Aiden Finch to give the Yellowjackets a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the second inning, with Jake Hertz on second and just one out, Rieth singled to left and Jake Hertz score to give Rochester a 4-0 lead. Matzat would make it 5-0 on a single to left center to bring Rieth home.

St. Lawrence would score in the bottom of the 5th and 6th to make it a final score of 5-2.

Brendan Shamieh would come in and pitch the 7th, striking out two Saints to pick up the save for Rochester.

Rieth would finish the first game going 2-for-4 at the plate with 1 RBI. Matzat and Herman would each go 1-for-3, with Matzat picking up 1 RBI and Herman getting a pair of RBI. Pickering would finish 1-for-4 with an RBI.

As a team, Rochester had ten hits, all of which were singles.

GAME 2: UR 11 SLU 4

Rochester would continue to build on their game one offensive performance in the second game.
In the top of the second, the Yellowjackets would just blow the game wide open, scoring seven runs in the inning. After a walk with the bases loaded, Kyle Trombley singled to bring Hertz and Brian McKinsey home. Matzat then added two more after singling up the middle to drive in Trombley and Rieth. Matzat would later come around to score on a Zach Miraz single. Harper Sy doubled down the left field line to make it 7-0 heading into the bottom of the second.

Matzat would get another RBI in the top of the third, driving in Trombley on a single to left. Miraz also singled later in the inning to drive Matzat in.

The shutout would not last long, as the Saints added three runs in the bottom half of the third and another run in the fourth.

Up 9-4 in the top of the 8th, the UR bats added a couple more runs. Joseph Rende singled to drive in Hertz. Later in the inning, Finch singled to left, allowing Trombley to score, making it 11-4.

Rochester would take game two by a final score of 11-4.
Matzat led the way for UR offensively in the second game, going 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. He also walked twice in the ballgame. Miraz finished 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs and a walk. Sy went 3-for-6 with an RBI and a double, the Yellowjackets only extra base hit between the two games.

Jon Turk and Trevor Van Allen took care of the pitching duties in game two. Turk picked up his fourth win of the season, going 5 innings, allowing 3 earned runs, and striking out 4. Van Allen pitch 4 shutout innings in relief and struck out another 4 saints.

Rochester is scheduled to play another doubleheader against St. Lawrence tomorrow, with the first game set to start at 10 am.  Officials moved up the start of the Sunday doubleheader (scheduled for noon) due to forecasted poor weather later in the day.
