KISSIMMEE, FL – The RIT baseball team (3-4) exploded for season-high totals of 13 runs and 16 hits en route to defeating Suffolk University (3-4), 13-6 from Osceola Park Stadium on Wednesday.
RIT spotted Suffolk a 2-0 lead, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning and eight more in the third inning to build an insurmountable lead. The first five batters all reached on base hits and scored in the first inning, while RIT sent 11 batters to plate in the third inning. Freshman John Mikolaicyk (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) put the game out of reach with a long grand slam to left field with two outs in the inning.
All nine RIT starters had at least one hit. Mikolaicyk hit his second home run of the season and drove in four runs. Kyle Terzini (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) drove in three runs and scored twice, while Patrick Blackall (Hershey, PA/Hershey) and Navada Waterman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) added three hits apiece. Brad Dippold (St. Mary’s PA/Elk County Catholic) drove in a pair of runs, while Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) and Luke McNamara (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) added a pair of hits each. Ian Humes (Hockessin, DE/Shipley School) also added a hit and scored a run.
Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville), who also scored twice and drove in a run, got the start on the mound, going four innings. Freshman Jon Opalewski (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) fired two innings of scoreless relief over the fifth and sixth innings, scattering two hits to earn his first collegiate win on the mound. Matt Vitro (Carmel, NY/Carmel), Liam Barry (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) and Michael Campbell (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) pitched the final three innings to close it out for the Tigers.
Rich Gilbride, Will Hopkins, Rich Giandrea and Nik San Antonio had two hit apiece for Suffolk.
RIT concludes play at the RussMatt Invitational on Friday morning at 9:15 a.m. against Rhode Island College.
