Section V Semifinal Preview: Boys’ Basketball Class D1

Steuben County meets Allegany County while Livingston County tangles with Allegany County when Class D1 heads to the semifinals. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 1 AVOCA (19-2/Steuben County) vs. No. 5 GENESEE VALLEY (15-7/Allegany County Division I) Tuesday, Feb. 26, 6 PM at Wayland-Cohocton.

Scoring offense: Avoca (72.80 PPG), Genesee Valley (66.90 PPG)

Scoring defense: Avoca (50.55 PPG), Genesee Valley (56.25 PPG)

Streak: Avoca has won eight straight. Genesee Valley has won four consecutive games.

How they got here: Nathan Nunn dropped 10 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter to help Avoca push past No. 8 seed Alfred-Almond 74-53 in the quarterfinals.

Genesee Valley defeated No. 4 seed Fillmore 76-65 in the quarterfinals.

Last time they met:  The game will mark the teams first matchup of the season.

Players to Watch for Avoca: LaDre Stanford Sr. 20.5 PPG, 10.6 RPG, 3.6 APG, 5.0 steals, 15 double-doubles (fifth most in Section V), 1,753 career points (fourth on active scoring list); Nathan Nunn Sr. 20.3 PPG, 7.0 RPG; Brady Brandow Jr. 10.3 PPG; Devin Stowe Jr. 7.1 PPG, 6.2 APG; Tristan Stark Jr. 8.2 PPG, 5.3 RPG.

Genesee Valley: Cody Schneider Jr. 23.7 PPG, 12.3 RPG, 16 double-doubles (tied for fourth-most in Section V); Evan Windus Jr. 14.9 PPG, 10.4 RPG; Josh McGuire Sr. 10.5 PPG.

No. 2 MOUNT MORRIS (18-3/Livingston County Division III) vs. No. 3 SCIO (16-5/Allegany County Division II) Tuesday, Feb. 26, 8 PM at Wayland-Cohocton.

Scoring offense: Mount Morris (67.50 PPG), Scio (58.45 PPG)

Scoring defense: Mount Morris (50.60 PPG), Scio (42.25 PPG)

Streak: Mount Morris has won its last 14 games. Scio has won five of their last six.

How they got here: Jansel Martinez’s 24 points, seven rebounds and four rebounds propelled Mount Morris over No. 7 seed Batavia-Notre Dame 77-43 in the quarterfinals.

Scio survived a scare in the quarterfinals, beating No. 11 seed Honeoye 56-55.

Last time they met:  The two teams will meet for the first time this year.

Players to Watch for Mount Morris: Jansel Martinez Jr. 14.0 PPG; Cameron Regal Sr. 15.9 PPG, 13.3 RPG, 17 double-doubles (tied for third-most in Section V); Dylan Cicero Sr. 12.3 PPG, 7.1 RPG.

Scio: Cameron Loucks So. 16.7 PPG, 13.1 RPG, 17 double-doubles (tied for third-most in Section V); Carter Scholla Sr. 15.2 PPG, 7.0 RPG; Brendan Graves Jr. 10.0 PPG, 6.3 APG.
