The postseason brackets are set and multiple Section V teams own a top seed and a spot on the NYS Top 25. Pittsford Mendon and East control top five Class A rankings and number one positions in their respective brackets.
Mendon (20-0) stands as the lone unbeaten team in the region entering the playoffs. The Vikings (No. 3 NYWSSA Class A/No. 1 PS LS Poll) hold the No. 1 seed in the Class A1 Sectional bracket and own one of the best point differentials in Section V, outscoring opponents by an average of 27.5 points. Seniors Dan Cook (18.8 ppg) and Michael Harrington (18.0 ppg) lead a squad with four players averaging in double figures. Mendon will look to avenge last year’s semifinal exit last postseason with a deep run, which they start on Saturday at 6 PM against Aquinas.
The East Eagles (19-1/No. 2 PS LS Poll) stand opposite Mendon as the No. 1 seed in the Class A2 Sectional bracket. Landing two spots behind at No. 5 NYWSSA Class A, East boasts another strong point differential, outscoring opponents by an average of 20.35 points, led by junior Zechariah Harris-Scott (19.3 ppg). Despite falling to McQuaid, the Eagles enter the playoffs on a five-game run and will play Leadership Academy on Saturday at 6 PM. Leadership eliminated East in last year’s quarterfinals.
Both the Class A1 and A2 second seeds, Greece Athena (17-3) and Northstar Christian (19-1) found places among the NYS Class A Top 25. After falling in the NYS Class C finals last year, Northstar (N0. 9 NYWSSA Class A/No. 3 PS LS Poll) was bumped to Class A. They play Wilson Magnet on Saturday at 6 PM. Athena (No. 19 NYWSSA Class A/No. 7 PS LS Poll) plays Brighton at 4 PM on Saturday.
While neither landed the top spot in the Class AA Sectionals, McQuaid (15-4/No. 4 PS LS Poll) and Gates-Chili (17-3) both earned rankings in the NYS Top 25. McQuaid got the No. 20 NYWSSA Class AA position and the No. 3 seed for the postseason. The Knights play Victor at 7pm on Friday. Gates-Chili (No. 25 NYWSSA Class AA/No. 6 PS LS Poll) received the No. 2 seed, and will meet Webster Schroeder on Friday at 6 PM.
For Class B, Greece Odyssey (17-3/No. 2 PS SS Poll) takes on a top seed in the B1 Sectional to go along with a No. 18 NYWSSA Class B ranking. Odyssey takes on Livonia, Saturday at 5 PM.
Lyons (18-2/No. 1 PS SS Poll) took home the No. 3 NYWSSA Class C spot and a No.1 seed in the Class C2 Sectional. C.G. Finney (16-4/No. 9 NYWSSA Class C/No. 4 PS SS Poll) and Caledonia-Mumford (19-1/No. 10 NYWSSA Class C/No. 3 PS SS Poll) made the top ten. Marcus Whitman (18-2/No. 13 NYWSSA Class C/No. 5 PS SS Poll) got the No. 1 seed in the Class C1 Sectional despite ranking below the other three.
In the Class D NYS Top 15, Avoca (18-2/No. 2 NYWSSA Class D/No. 9 PS SS Poll) and Prattsburgh (17-3/No. 3 NYWSSA Class D/No. 7 PS SS Poll) both made the top three, taking both the D1 and D2 Sectional top seeds respectively. Mount Morris (17-3) made the top 10 as No. 8 NYWSSA Class D with Elba (15-5) garnering the No. 15 NYWSSA Class D ranking.
