ST. CHARLES, MO – Senior Kathryn Kennedy (Hamilton, Ontario/) scored her second goal of the game with 2:55 left in regulation to lift the RIT women’s hockey team (10-14-4, 6-8-0 CHA) to a 4-3 victory over Lindenwood University (6-18-2, 2-11-1 CHA) from the Lindenwood Ice Arena Saturday afternoon.
With the game tied at 2-2, senior defenseman Logan Land (Turkey Point, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic) grabbed a loose puck at the RIT blueline, rushed through the neutral zone and into the Lindenwood zone, cut to the net and placed a backhander into the top corner of the net for her fourth goal of the season with 4:38 left to give RIT a 3-2 lead.
Just 28 seconds later, Lindenwood’s Shannon Morris-Reade fired a shot through traffic off an offensive zone face-off past RIT goaltender Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) to tie the game at 3-3.
With 2:55 left, Kennedy took a feed from Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) in the neutral zone, came in over the line and fired a wrist shot from the top of the left circle that eluded Lindenwood goaltender Sophie Wolf and went off the right post and in for her eighth goal of the year. That goal proved to be the game-winner.
Lindenwood pulled Wolf for the extra attacker in the final minute, but Lanteigne and the RIT defense hung on for the win.
Kennedy, who also scored 1:12 into the game, added an assist for a career-best three-point game. Brittney Gout (Caledon, Ontario/Brampton Canadettes) also scored a first period goal for the Tigers. Lanteigne turned aside 43 of 46 shots for her 10th win of the season.
Nicole Guagliardo had a goal an assist for the Lady Lions, while Nikki Friesen and Morris-Reade also scored. Megan Wagner added a pair of assists. In net, Wolf made 18 saves to take the loss.
Lindenwood out-shot RIT, 46-22, including 31-11 over the final two periods. RIT was 1-for-3 on the power-play, while Lindenwood finished 0-for-3.
“I thought the team stepped up and were relentless,” said Bruce B. Bates Women’s Hockey Coach Chad Davis. “That was the response we were looking for (after last night’s loss). Kathryn Kennedy (Hamilton, Ontario/) really stepped up today and Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) was stellar in net.”
RIT would jump out a quick lead just 1:12 in, as Kennedy took a feed from classmate Christa Vuglar (Crystal Lake, IL/Chicago Mission) and tucked in a shot for her seventh goal of the year. Kennedy would find Gout on a power-play with six minutes left in the opening period to make it 2-0.
Lindenwood would answer with with two second period goals to tie the game at 2-2.
RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 13-10-5. The Tigers won both earlier meetings this season by scores of 5-2 and 3-2 from the Polisseni Center on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Last night, Lindenwood defeated the Tigers, 3-2.
RIT is back in action next weekend with a home-and-home series against CHA foe Syracuse University. RIT hosts Syracuse from the Polisseni Center Friday night at 6 p.m.
