RIT falls to Ithaca on road

ITHACA, NY — The RIT (5-15, 2-11 Liberty League) men’s basketball team lost 80-72 at Ithaca College (12-9, 8-6 Liberty League) in Liberty League action from Ben Light Gymnasium Tuesday evening. 

RIT shot 48.2 percent from the floor on 27-of-57 shooting. The Tigers went 9-of-25 from beyond the arc, and made 7-of-10 from the foul line. Jaymee Rosser (Newark, NY/Newark) led a quartet of Tigers to score in double-figures, finishing with 15 points. Will Atkinson (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) tallied 13 points, while Cobey Adekanbi (Bloomfield, CT/Loomis Chafee) and Curtis Nesbit (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge) each scored 10 points. Adekanbi grabbed seven rebounds, while Nesbit dished out four assists. 

Peter Ezema led Ithaca with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Riley Thompson tallied 19 points, while Skylar Sinon chipped in 18 points for the Bombers, who shot 40.6 percent from the floor.

RIT led early in the first half on a 3-pointer from Rosser inside the first four minutes of the game. A Matt Anderson (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) jumper with 12 minutes remaining in the half cut the Ithaca lead to 19-17. The Bombers ran off 10 straight points, taking a 29-17 lead on a 3-pointer from Thompson at the 9:03 mark of the half. 

An Atkinson layup cut the Bombers lead to eight points, but Ithaca responded with an 8-0 spurt, taking a 37-21 lead on a layup from Sinon with 5:18 to play. Adekanbi converted an old-fashioned 3-point play, and Master Radford (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon St. Jude) made a pair of free throws late to cut the Ithaca lead to 41-30 at halftime.

Atkinson and Marcell Davis (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph’s Institute) each had seven first-half points for RIT, while Rosser chipped in five for the Tigers who shot 48.0 percent from the floor. Sinon led Ithaca with 13 points. 

RIT opened the second half with a 9-1 spurt, cutting the Ithaca lead to 42-39 on a 3-pointer from Nesbit three minutes into the second half. Chuck Okehie (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh) opened the half with a layup, followed by a 3-pointer from Rosser that cut the lead to six points. After a Sinon free throw, Atkinson scored just before the Nesbit triple.

Trailing 46-41, Rosser drained another 3-pointer, cutting the Bombers lead to 46-44 with 14:55 to play. Later in the half, Adekanbi cut the Ithaca lead to 53-48 on his layup off an assist from Radford. 

A Matt Flood 3-pointer with 6:23 remaining ballooned the Ithaca lead to 69-58, but the Tigers showed fight, scoring five straight points, cutting the Bombers lead to 69-63 on a layup by Atkinson with 5:29 remaining. Ithaca answered with a 9-3 spurt, taking a 78-66 lead on a pair of free throws from Flood. He and Thompson would make clutch free throws inside the last minute to seal the win for Ithaca.

RIT returns to action on Friday, Feb. 8 when the Tigers host Vassar College at 7 p.m. on the floor of Clark Gymnasium.
