ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis fell 54-53 to Davidson Saturday in a thrilling Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball matchup at Chaifetz Arena.
SLU dips to 14-6 overall and 5-2 in the A-10, while Davidson improves to 15-5 and 6-1 in league play. It was the first loss at Chaifetz Arena this season for the Billikens, who are now 11-1 on their home court.
Sophomore forward Hasahn French registered his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jordan Goodwin scored 12 points and dished out six assists, while Javon Bess had 10 points.
Davidson’s Jon Axel Gudmundsson was the lone Davidson player to score in double-figures with 27 points on 9-of-12 shooting.
The game came down to the wire. Dion Wiley put SLU on top by one, 53-52, with a 3-pointer from the left corner with 14 seconds remaining. On the other end, Gudmundsson was fouled and connected on both free throw attempts to put Davidson on top by a point with 5.7 seconds left.
Saint Louis had the ball as time was winding down. A Bess desperation shot was off the mark, and Goodwin corralled the rebound and was fouled on the putback. He went to the line to shoot two with .4 seconds remaining, but he missed both attempts and Davidson escaped with the win.
The game featured 18 lead changes and nine ties. SLU rallied from a six-point deficit late in the first half, and neither team led by more than four points in the second half.
The Billikens are back in action on Wednesday night when they take on Richmond at Chaifetz Arena. Tip time is 6 p.m., and the game will be televised on FOX Sports Midwest.
