PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Saint Louis suffered its first Atlantic 10 Conference loss of the season on Wednesday, falling at Duquesne 77-73 at the Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The loss snaps the Billikens’ six-game winning streak, as they move to 14-5 overall and 5-1 in A-10 play. Duquesne improves to 14-5 and 5-1 in the league.
Javon Bess led the Billikens with a career-high-tying 24 points and was a rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards. Tramaine Isabell Jr. scored 11 points, while D.J. Foreman and Hasahn French tallied 10 points apiece. Jordan Goodwin posted a team-high 12 rebounds as Saint Louis registered a season-high 54 rebounds all together.
SLU shot 38.8 percent from the field and 86.4 percent from the stripe. The Billikens were hampered by 23 turnovers.
The Billikens led by a point, 36-35, at halftime. French scored four points early on as Saint Louis built a 10-5 advantage five minutes in. A Goodwin jumper at the 3:03 mark of the first half gave SLU its largest lead of the frame at 34-26, but Duquesne ended the first half with a 9-2 rally to pull to within one at halftime.
However, Duquesne came out of the gates on fire in the second half and quickly took the lead, and the Dukes would not trail the rest of the way. Every time SLU cut its deficit to two, Duquesne had an answer on the other end. A Dion Wiley 3-pointer with 4:23 remaining pulled SLU to within three of the lead, but that is close as the Billikens would get as Duquesne hung on for the win.
Saint Louis returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Davidson at Chaifetz Arena. Tip time is 1 p.m. All fans are encouraged to wear white. Free white t-shirts will be placed on every seat of Chaifetz Arena, compliments of Edward Jones.
