ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Tyler Stenglein (Irondequoit) scored a season-high 25 points and Jake Burgio (Brockport) added 20 for host Nazareth Friday as the Golden Flyers handed Stevens its first Empire 8 Conference defeat of the season in men’s basketball, 92-85, at the Kidera Gymnasium.
The Golden Flyers won for the fourth straight time to improve to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the E8. The Ducks had an eight-game winning streak snap and dropped to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in conference games.
Stenglein was sharp from the outset for the Golden Flyers as he made 10 of 14 shots from the field, including one three-pointer. He scored 14 of his points in the first half as the Golden Flyers were building a 43-32 advantage and never trailed thereafter. Burgio went 9-for-11 from the field with one three-point basket in delivering his 20 points.
Nazareth made 17 of 32 shots with three three-pointers in the first half to build a commanding advantage. The lead grew to as large as 17 points on three separate occasions in the second half before Stevens rallied late. A pair of free throws by Jones made it 64-47 with 13:47 left.
Stevens closed to within six points, 91-85, with :27 left, but the Ducks ran out of time.
Alec DiPietrantonio led all scorers with 36 points and 12 rebounds. He made 14 of 18 shots. Ryan Coffey added 16 and Frank Amarai 12.
Nazareth enjoyed its best shooting night of the season in making 34 of 59 shots (57.6%. The Golden Flyers also went 8-for-17 from three-point range (47.1%).
The Golden Flyers are home again Saturday to play Sage at 4 p.m. in another Empire 8 Conference game.
