Kostecka and Hemphill nab PL weekly honors

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Loyola Maryland junior guard Andrew Kostecka was named the Patriot League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, while Boston University forward Jack Hemphill claimed rookie of the week for the first time when the League office announced weekly awards on Monday.


Kostecka posted his first collegiate double-double with 29 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three assists, three steals and two blocks in the Greyhounds’ 75-65 win over Mount St. Mary’s on Saturday. This is Kostecka’s second career Patriot League weekly honor.


Hemphill captured his first rookie of the week honor of the season after averaging 6.5 points and 3.5 rebounds to help the Terriers go 2-0 with road wins over New Hampshire (82-53) and Elon (65-58).


American junior guard Sa’eed Nelson, Army West Point junior forward Matt Wilson, Boston University junior forward Tyler Scanlon and Holy Cross sophomore wing Jacob Grandison each earned weekly honorable mention.


The Patriot League men’s basketball players of the week are selected in a vote by League media members and each school’s sports information director, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.


Andrew Kostecka, Loyola Maryland, Jr., G, Germantown, Md./Clarksburg

*Kostecka recorded his first collegiate double-double with 29 points and 11 rebounds to lead Loyola Maryland over Mount St. Mary’s, 75-65, on Saturday.

*The junior guard also tied for a team-lead with three assists, while keying the Greyhounds’ defensive effort with three steals and two blocks.

*Kostecka went 12-for-12 from the foul line for the fifth-best single-game free-throw performance in program history.



Jack Hemphill, Boston University, Fr., F, Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft

*Hemphill averaged 6.5 points and 3.5 rebounds during a 2-0 week, as Boston University defeated New Hampshire and Elon.

*The freshman forward scored 10 points, making 2-of-3 attempts from 3-point range, while pulling down two rebounds in the Terriers’ 82-53 win over the Wildcats.

*Hemphill pulled down five rebounds to help BU erase a nine-point deficit in the second half to beat Elon.



Sa’eed Nelson, American, Sr., G, Pleasantville, N.J./Saint Augustine Prep

*Nelson averaged 24.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.5 steals to help American go 1-1 last week, including a win over VMI.


Matt Wilson, Army West Point, Jr., F, Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County

*Wilson averaged a double-double last week 17.5 points and 10.0 rebounds during a two-game span to help the Black Knights defeat Binghamton and Fairfield.


Tyler Scanlon, Boston University, Jr., F, Centreville, Va./Westfield

*Scanlon led the Terriers to wins over New Hampshire and Elon, averaging 16.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.0 steal per game. He scored 12 points of his team-high 18 points during a 14-3 game-ending run to help lift BU over Elon.


Jacob Grandison, Holy Cross, So., G/F, Oakland, Calif./Phillips Exeter Academy (N.H.)

*Grandison averaged 17.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals while shooting 54.5 percent from 3-point range (6-for-11) to help Holy Cross go 1-1 with a win over Fairleigh Dickinson last week.

*The sophomore wing finished with 21 points, going 5-for-5 from long distance in a loss to Harvard.
