SELINSGROVE, PA – Junior Lizzie Straub scored a game-high and career-high 23 points while fellow junior Rachel Benedict (Brockport) added 15 points and 11 rebounds as the Nazareth College women’s basketball team scored a 78-54 victory over Westminster College in the opening game of the Susquehanna Trailways Tipoff Tournament Saturday at Susquehanna University.
The win for Nazareth (1-0) advances the Golden Flyers to the 3 p.m. championship game of the tournament Sunday.
Straub’s previous career-high was 16 points in a freshman year win over Hilbert.
Benedict scored six points and grabbed five rebounds in the opening quarter as the Golden Flyers jumped out to an 18-9 early lead. Straub hit three baskets including the first of her four 3-pointers on the night for a team-best seven points in the second quarter. Nazareth led 44-27 at the break.
In the second half, Straub stayed hot with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting including a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point range. The Golden Flyers were an impressive 15-for-24 (62.5%) from the field in the final two quarters to pull away for the win.
Freshman Jadyn Abrams finished with eight points while Isabella Gjonja added five points, seven rebounds and a team-leading four assists.
