HAMILTON, NY — Senior Tyler Stenglein (Irondequoit) and junior Cody Green each scored 15 points for the Nazareth College men’s basketball team to help keep the Golden Flyers close in the first half but NCAA Division I Colgate pulled away in the second half and scored an 86-68 victory Wednesday night.

Nazareth (0-1) led for the first several minutes of the game after Stenglien opened the contest with a 3-pointer. The game went back and forth until a Colgate (3-1) basket with eight minutes to play in the opening period gave Raiders the lead for good at 23-22.

Colgate led by six at 40-34 at the end of the first half and opened the second half with an 18-2 run to extend the lead.

Senior Brendan Wind (Greece Athena) stopped the run with a layup after a steal by sophomore Stephen Gabel (Fairport) but the Golden Flyers could not recover from the early second half run.

A total of 10 different players scored for Nazareth with freshman Zach Stenglein scoring eight in his first career game and Wind finishing with eight points as well. Senior Jake Burgio (Brockport) added seven points and a team-leading six rebounds.

The Golden Flyers will officially open the season Friday with the BSG Tipoff Tournament in Kidera Gymnasium. The Golden Flyers will face Hiram College in the second game Friday after TCNJ and Cazenovia open the tournament with a 6 p.m. game.
