BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women’s basketball team forced 20 turnovers on Tuesday night as the Cardinals opened their 2018-19 season with a 54-41 win at The College at Brockport in a non-conference pairing inside Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.  With the win, Fisher moved to 1-0 while the Golden Eagles continue their season at 0-1.

Despite the final score, it was all Brockport to begin the game as the Golden Eagles jumped out to an 11-4 win courtesy of an 11-1 run over a five-minute stretch.  The home team’s lead would grow to eight points until a pair of free throws by Alex Reigle cut the deficit to six points heading into the second quarter.

As the second stanza got underway, Fisher found its groove on both ends of the floor as the Cardinals quickly turned the tides and used an 18-0 run fueled by six points from freshman Mallory Wood to open up a 27-17 lead with just over one minute left to go before halftime.  The Golden Eagles would weather the storm, however, and closed out the half with six unanswered points to head into the locker room trailing by four, 27-23.

Neither team was able to string together a run as the third period got underway as the Cardinals held a five-point cushion with 4:06 still showing on the clock.  From there, head coach Melissa Kuberka‘s squad turned up the intensity and closed out the quarter with a 10-2 run that featured 3-pointers by senior Erin Hulbert and freshman Leah Koonmen (Our Lady of Mercy) to hold a 41-28 advantage.

Fisher’s lead would balloon to as many as 17 points in the fourth quarter before the Golden Eagles strung together eight of the game’s next 10 points to pull to within 11, but time would run out as Fisher claimed its season-opener by double digits.

Reigle led the way for Fisher with 13 points in 26 minutes including 5-of-9 shooting from the floor.  Reigle also added five rebounds and three steals in the win.  Wood chipped in with 12 points in her collegiate debut while Hulbert finished with nine points, six boards, four steals and three assists.  Sydney Masna pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for Fisher while Olivia Baumann contributed eight points overall in 19 minutes.

As a team, Fisher was 18-for-48 from the floor and controlled the glass after out-rebounding Brockport 43-33.

The Cardinals will continue their season at 5:30 p.m. on Friday when they host the first annual Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court.  The Cardinals will battle Hilbert in the opening game with Anna Maria and SUNY Poly duking it out in the night’s other contest.
