RIT sneaks by Cobleskill in opener

COBLESKILL, NY — The RIT (1-0) men’s basketball team opened its 2018-19 season with a thrilling 60-59 win at SUNY Cobleskill (0-1) Saturday afternoon. Cobey Adekanbi (Bloomfield, CT/Loomis Chafee) scored the game-winning bucket with 35 seconds remaining in the second half. Will Atkinson (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius)made a big steal to seal the win for the Tigers.

RIT shot 34.4 percent from the floor on 21-of-61 shooting. The Tigers were 13-of-35 from beyond the arc, and made 5-of-12 from the foul line. Charles Okehie (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh) had a double-double for RIT, tallying 10 points and grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds. Jaymee Rosser (Newark, NY/Newark) led the Tigers with 15 points, while Atkinson scored 12 points and had six assists. Adekanbi finished with seven points and eight rebounds for the Tigers who held a 43-31 rebounding edge.

Anthony McNeil led Cobleskill with 19 points. Dashown Nelson tallied nine points and had 12 rebounds for Cobleskill who shot 36.8 percent from the floor on 21-of-57 shooting.

RIT led by as many as nine points twice in the first half. Justin Schneider (Aurora, NY/Southern Cayuga)gave RIT a 16-7 lead at the 12:04 mark, and Chase Lewis (Ewing, NJ/Princeton Day School) gave the Tigers a 19-10 lead on his three-pointer with 10:28 remaining in the half. Cobleskill closed the first half strong, tying the score on a layup by McNeil with eight seconds to play in the half.

Cobleskill took a lead early in the second half on a jumper by McNeail. Rosser answered back on RIT’s next possession, draining a three-pointer to give the Tigers a 28-27 lead. Atkinson extended the RIT lead to 40-32 on his three-pointer with 12:36 remaining. The Tigers led by as many as 10 points in the second half on a layup by Adekanbi with 11:28 to play.

Cobleskill cut the RIT lead to 47-45 on a layup by Ian Jordan with 7:20 remaining. Rosser gave RIT a 58-52 lead with three-pointer with 2:24 to play. A pair of Jayquan Robinson free throws with 1:03 to play gave Cobleskill a 59-58 lead.

On RIT’s next possession, Atkinson missed a layup, but Adekanbi was their for the offensive rebound. He scored despite being fouled to give RIT a 60-59 lead. He missed the free throw giving Cobleskill a chance in the dying seconds of the game. Atkinson came up with the big steal to seal the win for RIT.

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 13 when the Tigers host cross-town rival the University of Rochester at 7 p.m. on the floor of Clark Gym.
