RIT men’s hockey to open home schedule this weekend vs. American International

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men’s hockey team will play its first two home games of the 2018-19 season against Atlantic Hockey foe American International on Nov. 9-10. Friday’s game from the Gene Polisseni Center begins at 7:05 p.m., while Saturday’s contest gets underway at 5:05 p.m.

Tickets for both games are available at the Gene Polisseni Center Box Office or online at www.rittickets.com. Friday’s game features free tickets for all RIT students (first-come, first-served, one ticket per valid ID and must be picked up at the GPC Box Office). In addition, the first 3,500 fans receive a free long sleeve t-shirt as we look to make it a sea of orange. Saturday is a Tiger Den Event night.

RIT (3-3-1, 1-2-1 AHA) earned one point in a pair of Atlantic Hockey contests at Mercyhurst last weekend, losing 4-3 Friday and skating to a 2-2 draw Saturday. Friday, Jake Hamacher (Corona, CA/Dubuque Fighting Saints), Abbott Girduckis (Belleville, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) and Jordan Peacock(Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Cougars) scored for RIT. Saturday, Hamacher scored a shorthanded goal in the second period and Erik Brown (Keene, Ontario/Kemptville 73’s) tallied on the power-play with just 30 seconds left in regulation in the 2-2 tie. Logan Drackett (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Canucks) was strong in goal, stopping 27 of 29 shots.

Brown’s goal on Saturday night was the 56th of his collegiate career, breaking a Division I team record he shared with Simon Lambert and Tyler Brenner.

Girduckis leads the team in scoring through seven games this season with nine points on four goals and five assists. Hamacher and Gabe Valenzuela (Brampton, Ontario/North York Rangers) are right behind with seven points apiece. Drackett has played in all seven games in net and has a 2.39 goals against average and a .921 save percentage.

American International (3-5-1, 3-2-1 AHA) will head to Western New York for the second consecutive weekend. Last weekend, the Yellowjackets split a pair of games at AHA foe Canisius, falling 4-2 on Friday before rebounding with a 6-1 win Saturday. Blake Christensen leads AIC in scoring with nine points on four goals and five assists in nine games. Shawn McBride and Brennan Kapcheck have a team-best six assists apiece. In goal, Stefano Durante and Zackarias Skog have split time this season. Durante is 3-2-1 with a 3.08 goals against average and an .866 save percentage.

RIT and American International will meet this weekend for a pair and once again in Springfield, Mass. for two contests on Jan. 11-12. RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 30-6-3. The two teams split the regular season series last season at the Polisseni Center. Valenzuela leads all active Tigers against AIC with eight points in eight career games.

Both games will air on CW Rochester (Tape delay on Friday at 10 p.m., and Saturday live on Digital – 13.2, DirecTV – 14 and Spectrum – 16) and stream live with Gene Battaglia and John DiTullio on the call from the Polisseni Center. The pregame show with host Kevin Roche airs Saturday at 4:30 p.m. In addition, both contests will be aired on WITR 89.7 FM and Fox Sports 1280 with Ed Trefzger and Scott Biggar on the call.
