A fresh set of Section V faces look to make noise this year in the 2018 New York State Far West Regionals. Wins in this weekend’s matches at Sweet Home High School, and Hilton (Class AA), Brighton (A), Bath-Haverling (B), Geneseo (C) and C. G. Finney (D) will advance to the NYS semifinals.
Here are the matchups:
Class D Friday (Nov. 2) 5 PM
NORTH COLLINS (8-8-1/No. 12 NYSSSWA) vs. C.G. FINNEY (19-1-0/No. 10 NYSSWA)
How they arrived here: North Collins topped Pine Valley, 2-1 in the Section VI Class D semifinals and finished off Ellicottville 2-0 in the finals.
C.G. Finney began the Section V Class D1 tournament with a 4-1 win over Genesee Valley in the quarterfinals, followed by a 2-0 victory against Filmore and a 2-0 dismissal of Jasper-Troupsburg in the finals. The Falcons pulled another 2-0 out of the hat, beating Avoca in the regional qualifier.

Class C Friday (Nov. 2) 7:30 PM
RANDOLPH (10-8-1/No. 14 NYSSSWA) vs. GENESEO (16-3-1/No. 7 NYSSWA)
How they arrived here: Randolph beat up on Chautauqua Lake 3-0 in the Section VI Class C quarterfinals, before winning a pair of one goal games against Westfield-Brocton and Maple Grove.
Geneseo got their momentum going with a 7-0 shutout of Wheatland-Chili in the Section V Class C2 quarterfinal, penalty kicks were needed to pass Keshequa in the semifinal, 2-2 (3-1) with a 1-0 shutout against Naples to take the final. A 1-0 repeat followed to triumph over Sodus in the regional qualifier.

Class B Saturday (Nov. 3) 2:30 PM
EAST AURORA (19-0-1/No. 2 NYSSSWA) vs. BATH-HAVERLING (20-0-0/No. 1 NYSSWA)
How they arrived here: East Aurora cruised past Newfane in the Section VI Class B1 quarterfinals, 7-1 before winning against Olean in the semifinals 3-0 and taking down Lakawanna 4-2 in the finals. The Blue Devils dropped Section VI Class B2 champion Southwestern in the regional qualifier.
Bath-Haverling did not allow a goal during a run through the Section V Class B2 championship, taking down both Attica and LeRoy 5-0 and polishing off Letchworth/Warsaw 1-0. Palmyra-Macedon fell to the Rams 2-0 in the regional qualifier.

Class A Saturday (Nov. 3) 5 PM
WILLIAMSVILLE EAST (18-2-0/No. 8 NYSSSWA) vs. BRIGHTON (16-4-0/No. 15 NYSSWA)
How they arrived here: Williamsville East began Section VI Class A1 championships with a 10-3 drubbing of Hutch Tech, a semifinal victory over Grand Island 3-1 and finished in a 2-1 win against Hamburg. The Flames knocked out Lewiston-Porter, 4-2 in the regional qualifier.
Brighton handled Aquinas 4-0 in the opening round, followed by a 3-1 quarterfinal win against Pittsford Sutherland, a shutout of Spencerport (1-0) in the semifinals and claimed an overtime thriller over Churchville-Chili to take home the Section V Class A championship.

Class AA Friday (Nov. 3) 7:30 PM
CLARENCE (17-2-0/No. 4 NYSSSWA) vs. HILTON (15-2-2/No. 8 NYSSWA)
How they arrived here: Back-to-back shutouts in the quarterfinals and semifinals against Jamestown and Williamsville North, respectively, were followed by a 2-1 win over Lancaster in the finals to help Clarence capture the Section VI Class AA championship.
Hilton topped Webster Thomas 2-0 in the Section V Class AA quarterfinal, before beating Edison 3-1 in the semifinals and coming back against Rush-Henrietta in the finals 2-1 to reach the regionals.

The last time any of these Section V teams won the State Championship was in 1996 by Bath. Hilton took the AA crown in 1987. Brighton, Geneseo and C.G. Finney have never taken home the hardware. Section V teams have won a NYS title in five of the last six years. McQuaid won last year’s Class AA state title, the first Section V Class AA winner in 13 years .
