Semifinal Preview: Boys Soccer Class D1

Top-seeded C.G. Finney (No. 20 NYSSWA) battles No. 4 Fillmore while No. 2 Mount Morris (No. 14 NYSSWA) and No. 3 Jasper-Troupsburg (No. 15 NYSSWA) do battle. Spots in the Section V D1  final are at stake. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 1 seed C.G. Finney Falcons (16-1-0) vs. No. 4 seed Fillmore Eagles (14-2-1)

How they got here: Finney defeated No. 8 Genesee Valley 4-1, while Fillmore eliminated No. 5 Northstar Christian on penalty kicks.

Season matchup: Finney shut out Fillmore 3-0 in their non-league matchup in the regular season.

Names to know: Finney – Ian Lau Atencio (33 goals, 14 assists), Emmanuel Rubingu (17 goals, 12 assists), Keegan Ocorr (16 goals, 26 assists) and Conner Torrell (nine goals, seven assists).

Fillmore – Levi Webb (16 goals, six assists), Tobias Webb (13 goals, five assists), Ethan Peet (nine goals, six assists), Max McCumiskey (four goals, nine assists) and Dylan Valentine (86 saves, ten goals against).

Coaches: Steve Merritt (Finney), Jamie Mullen (Fillmore)

History 101: After winning the Class D2 title in 2016, Finney was sent home earlier than expected in 2017. The Falcons fell to Wheatland-Chili in quarterfinals with a penalty kick loss. Fillmore was also sent home after a quarterfinals loss in 2017.

The semifinal match is scheduled for 5 PM in Perry on Tuesday.

 

No. 2 seed Mount Morris Blue Devils (15-2-0) vs. No. 3 seed Jasper-Troupsburg Wildcats (15-1-1)

How they got here: Mount Morris eliminated Alfred Almond with a 2-1 victory while Jasper-Troupsburg beat Honeoye 3-1.

Season matchup: First matchup on the 2018 season

Names to know: Mount Morris – Steven Soto (19 goals, 11 assists), Cameron Regal (16 goals, 15 assists), Collin Young (14 goals, eight assists), Dylan Cicero (four goals, three assists) and Jose Cruz (147 saves with 22 goals against).

Jasper-Troupsburg – Allesandro Sozzani (26 goals, 11 assists), Tyler Flint (seven goals, one assist), Aaron Flint (seven goals, nine assists), Brayden Hill (five goals, three assists) and Weston Hayes (57 saves).

Coaches: Joe Connolly (Mount Morris), Bryan Lewis (Jasper-Troupsburg)

History 101: Mount Morris took home the D1 title last season for the first time since a D2 title in 2014. In the finals, the Blue Devils faced none other than Jasper-Troupsburg. J-T won titles in 2012 and 2013.

The re-match is set to start at 6 PM Tuesday in Cohocton.
