ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Senior Mary Kate Ordway scored her first goal of the season in the 59th minute Saturday to lift host Nazareth to a 1-0 women’s soccer Alfred in a key Empire 8 Conference matchup.
The victory lifted Nazareth’s overall record to 6-3-3 with a 2-0-2 mark in conference play. Alfred dropped to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in the E8. The Golden Flyers play at home again Sunday against Hartwick at 1 p.m.
Although Nazareth held sizable advantages in shots (14-2) and corner kicks (9-0), the game was scoreless at halftime and stayed that way until the 59th minute when Nazareth was awarded a free kick outside the Alfred penalty area. Megan Gallacchi tapped a short pass to Ordway, who unleashed a right-footed blast that settled into the upper right corner of the goal for the lone tally.
More scoring chances followed, but Nazareth was whistled for six offsides violations and Alfred three. Junior keeper Hannah Miller was called upon to make one save to gain the shutout for the Golden Flyers. Makenzie Cashmer had six saves for the Saxons.
Nazareth had a great chance in the second minute of the game when freshman Ashley Plane (Aquinas) burst past the Alfred defense, but her shot was tipped over the goal by Cashmer. Plane had three of Nazareth’s 4 shots. Elizabeth Guidi and Mia Longo each had two.
