Gridiron Notes: ER/Gananda’s Ramblin’ Man, Hatfield & McCoy time in Livingston County and Spartan Poison

Three weeks in the books. After this week’s games Section V will be releasing its first Power Seeding Point totals for each classification. Look for a story on just what the Power Seeding Points system is and what it means. Now on to the bits and bobs from Section V football, Chapter 3:

 IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

Rambin’ Man

ER/Gananda senior RB Jayden Castrechini wears #13. He’s not big or imposing at only 5-8. He’s not bruising at only 165 pounds. But tell the Finger Lakes opponents to try and stop them and they’ll say, ‘Yeah right.’

Castrechini is once again tearing up the stat chart this year. In 3 games this season, he’s accounted for 735 total yards from scrimmage (245.0 yards per game) and 11 total touchdowns — the breakdown includes 625 yards rushing and 9 TDs on the ground with another 110 yards receiving and 2 more touchdowns through the air.

And it’s not like Castrechini just burst on the scene either: In 10 games last year he logged 2,194 total yards — 2,023 on the ground and 171 yards receiving — and scored 26 total TDs. As a sophomore, 627 total yards from scrimmage and 9 TDs.

While his 202.3 yards from scrimmage and 2.8 TDs per game in 2016 was fantastic, he’s on pace to eclipse those marks as he averages 208.3 yards rushing and 3.6 TDs per game. He’s a big part of why ER/Gananda is 2-1 and looking to improve on its Class C Finals loss a year ago.

Friday night in a 49-36 win over Penn Yan, Castrechini had 252 yards from scrimmage and accounted for 5 TDs – 142 yards rushing and 3 TDs, and 110 yards receiving and 2 TDs.

Just One of Those Games

It’s hard to tell whether Alexander’s 90-14 victory over Geneseo is a Section V record for points, but if it isn’t it surely is close. The Blue Devils should take solace; it wasn’t as bad as when Georgia Tech beat Cumberland 222-0 in 1916. Geneseo will bounce back; the Blue Devils entered the game 2-0 and ranked 8th in Class D.

Putting on a McClinic

When you score 90 points, there are a lot of stats, but one player stood out in the 90-14 win for Alexander: Chris McClinic. McClinic touched the ball 6 times, averaging 39.8 yards every time he was fed the pigskin, netting 239 yards and 4 scores: 4 rushes for 157 yards with TD runs of 41, 71 and 44; and 82 yards receiving on two catches and 1 TD.

Welcome to Pinball Football

8-man football got underway as Oakfield-Alabama/Elba knocked off Finney/Northstar 46-30 on Friday and Holley hit two long three pointers inside the last minute to knock off Marcus Whitman 56-52…oh wait, wrong sport.

Longest Active Win Streaks:

  • 6 – Attica (last 3 in 2017 + 3 in 2018)
  • 6 – East (last 4 in 2017 + 2 in 2018) – pending conclusion of suspended Wilson game

Streak Buster

Dundee’s 8-6 win over rival South Seneca/Romulus/Trumansburg snapped a 10-game losing streak for the storied Class D program.

Still Waiting

Greece Olympia/Odyssey currently is tied for the longest winning drought in the state at 22 games (with Copiague [XI – Long Island]). The Spartans have another chance to break this streak with a road game at Bishop Timon (VI) Friday night. The last time GO/O won was early on in 2015.

Still 3 Points Short

Brockport continues to hold a 3-point advantage over Brighton with its 10-7 victory this past weekend. Last year in the Class A Quarterfinals, Brockport topped the Barons 24-21.

Livingston County’s Must See Rivalry

Toss out the records, it’s Hatfield and McCoy time in Livingston County. Cal-Mum/Byron Bergen travels to LeRoy to take on the Oatkan Knights at 7:30 pm. Friday. Only 6.7 miles separate these two programs, and it takes on added meaning as Cal-Mum upset LeRoy in the Class C Semi enroute to its sectional title last season.

Pick your Spartan Poison

The offensive Trio of QB Jonathon Rowley (297 yards passing, 3 TDs), RB Marcus Fadden (21 carries, 266 yards, 2 TDs) and WR Maurice Glenn (8 catches for 279 yards and 2 TDs) were too much for Leadership Academy. GC won 59-32.

Defenders of the Universe

  • The Wayne defense made life miserable for Pal-Mac all game, limiting Pal-Mac to just 44 yards of total offense in a 48-0 whitewashing.
  • AQ freshman LB Will Benjamin registered 10 tackles (2 for loss) and forced 1 fumble as the Irish shut down Canisius on the road.
  • York/Pavilion’s Josh Davis and Riley Stella each recorded 10 tackles – with 6 if Elliott’s coming behind the line of scrimmage (2 for sack) in a 42-26 loss to rival Perry/Mt.Morris.
  • Waterloo’s defense limited Newark to just 177 total yards of offense in a 26-6 win.

Just Give Me The Ball

  • BK/Roc Prep’s Nathan Carter was a workhorse with 30 carries and 285 yards and 3 scores in BK/RP’s win against Section VI’ Bishop Timon.
  • Greece Arcadia’s K’myn Crumity gained 221 yards on 30 carries and 4 TDs. Arcadia beat Olympia/Odyssey 36-26.
  • Irondequoit QB Freddy June Jr., tossed 2 TDs and ran for 2 more in IQ’s 43-21 rout of Spencerport.
  • Cal-Mum/Byron-Bergen’s Bryce Yokel rushed for 164 yards on 23 carries and 2 TDs in a 35-12 win over St. Mary’s of Buffalo.
  • Kyle Rinker (19-205, 3 TDs) and Cordell Galvan (12-104-1) led a potent rushing attack that saw Bath-Haverling ring up more than 400 yards rushing in a 52-28 win over Avon.
  • Dual-threat QB Nate Freeman rushed for 166 yards and threw for another 28 and accounted for three scores in the loss to Bath-Haverling.
  • Notre Dame’s Gabe McDonald torched Cuba-Rushford for 201 yards and 2 TDs on 27 carries as the Irish shut out C-R 20-0.
  • Batavia’s Ray Leach ran the ball 19 times for 174 yards and 4 touchdowns in the Blue Devil’s 40-0 rout of previously unbeaten and unscored-upon Letchworth/Warsaw.
  • York/Pavilion’s Sebastian Hacket rushed for 149 yards on 17 carries and scored 1 TD in the loss to Perry/Mt.Morris.
  • ER/Gananda QB Corywn Cleveland accounted for 315 total yards of offense and 5 TDs in a 49-36 win over Penn Yan. He rushed for 155 yards and 3 scores and was 5-for-5 passing for 160 yards and 2 scores.
  • Red Jacket’s power running game was led by Logan Keifer (193 yards) and John Scharf (110 yards) in a 40-26 win over previously undefeated Clyde-Savannah.

Arms Race

  • Monroe’s Quintin Everett tossed three scores of 97, 77 and 23, but it wasn’t enough as Monroe dropped a 28-24 decision to HFL.
  • Aquinas’ Tyler Szalkowski had an ‘off’ day with 5 incompletions…he connected on 12-of-17 passes for 219 yards and 2 TDs in a 35-24 win at Canisius.
  • Wayne’s Grayson Zenelovic was nearly perfect, completing 9-of-11 passes for 141 yards and 2 TDs in the win over Pal-Mac.
  • Will Rogers of Penn Yan completed 10-of-17 passes for 170 yards and 2 TDs in the loss to ER/Gananda. For the season, Rogers is 65-of-93 for 814 yards for the 2-1 Mustangs.

Better To Receive

  • Greece Athena’s Kelvin Reaves snared 13 balls for 146 yards and a TD. Athena beat Thomas 14-7.
  • AQ’s Ulysees Russell hauled in 3 passes for 113 yards, including a 90-yard TD pitch-and-catch.

Let’s Play 2

Saturday’s double-header at Marina Auto Stadium features Monroe and Wilson at 1 pm, and in the ‘night-cap,’ it’s the battle of the Preps, as Bishop Kearney/Rochester Prep will take on University Prep at 4 pm.

Must See Games

Friday

  • Irondequoit @ Victor, 7 pm. Where to start – both teams undefeated, sure to be in the top 7 in the state, and vying for the top slot in Class A Sectionals. Get there early.
  • Pittsford @ Fairport, 7 pm. Can Fairport keep the train rolling?
  • Le Roy @ Caledonia-Mumford/Byron-Bergen, 7:30 pm. Hide the women and children.

Saturday

  • Webster Thomas @ Canandaigua, 2 pm. Canandaigua averages 35 points per game; Thomas give up 10 per game.
  • St. Joe’s (VI) @ Aquinas, 1 pm. Do the Irish remember how to play on their home field?
