Thirteen Section V teams debut this week in the first New York State Sportswriters Association’s football rankings of the season, led by Aquinas in Class AA and Victor in Class A.

Aquinas, 2-0 and scoring 45.5 points per game, is the highest ranked Section V team in Class AA, coming in at #5. McQuaid (2-0) also made the cut for Class AA, debuting at #20, thanks in part to a 42-37 come-from-behind win against powerhouse #28 Canisius this past week. Aquinas takes on Canisuis on the road this week. McQuaid hosts Aquinas on October 6.

Victor is the highest Class A team from Section V at #3, allowing just 7 points this season. Also in Class A, Irondequoit (2-0), thanks to a solid defensive performance against Athena this past week, is at #7, while defending Class A sectional champ Wilson (2-0) shows up at #18. Surprisingly, East (2-0) only garnered honorable mention status, despite its potent offense and stingy defense, outscoring their opponents 40-6.5 through two games.

In Class B, Batavia (2-0) debuts at #10, closely followed by #14 Wayne (2-0) and Livonia (2-0) at #19.

In Class C, Penn Yan (2-0) opens at #15 with its prolific passing game, and East Rochester (1-1) and unscored upon Letchworth/Warsaw show up at Nos. 19 and 20, respectively. Batavia hosts Letchworth/Warsaw Friday night at 7:30 pm, and ER travels to Penn Yan on Friday night.

In Class D, 3 of the Top 10 teams call Section V home: Alexander (2-0) at #2, Clyde-Savannah (2-0) at #4, and Geneseo (2-0) at #8. The ranking even puts more excitement into Friday night’s game at Geneseo as it hosts Alexander at 7:30 pm.

Besides East in Class A, others receiving Honorable Mention status include Fairport and Hilton in Class AA; Canandaigua, Greece Athena, Greece Arcadia, Webster Schroeder, and Webster Thomas in Class A; Geneva in Class B; and LeRoy, Wayland-Cohocton and Wellsville in Class C.
