For the second straight year, Ben Cowles has been named Finger Lakes East Player of the Year as voted upon by league coaches. The Newark senior and University of Maryland commit finished at the plate with a .512 average, a .650 on-base percentage and four home runs. Cowles tossed 14.2 innings for Newark, earning three saves and posting a 0.95 ERA. The shortstop was also named the 2018 Section V Class B Player of the Year.
Devin Hicks joined Cowles on the Finger Lakes East First Team All-League. The junior starter led Section V Class B champion Midlakes with a 3-0 record on the year, striking out 27 in 23.2 innings pitched while limiting opponents to 19 total hits. Wayne’s Logan Holgado also earned first team. The junior hurler tossed a league-high 51.2 innings with 42 strikeouts and a 1.35 ERA. He led the league in batting average (.578), hits (26) and stolen bases (18). Ezra Maslyn proved to be another key member of Midlakes, throwing 20 innings and allowing just five earned runs, giving him a 2.25 ERA. Donny McMahon was dynamic for Penn Yan, winning four games and saving one in 38.2 innings on the mound. Also toeing the rubber for Penn Yan was league strikeout champion Derrick Riviello, who fanned 57 in 33 innings of work.
Mynderse senior catcher Keegan Baker finished the season with a .380 average, four doubles and 12 RBI. Peyton Schuck hit .404 with 19 hits and 19 runs scored for Penn Yan while manning the backstop.
Wayne’s Sean Flannery led the league with 22 hits for a .415 average and a .456 on base percentage. Jessie Kabat paced Mynderse with a .385 average and tied with Keegan Baker with a team-high four doubles. Jordan Maher topped the league in runs scored (22) and stolen bases (12) for Midlakes. Caden Murray hit .396 for Newark and Brennan Prather batted .386 with 20 runs scored for Penn Yan.
Wayne senior Tom Bolt and Newark junior Lucas DeVito both finished the season without an error in the outfield. Jake Webb batted batted .351 with 15 runs scored for Waterloo. Nate Westbrook led Midlakes with a .424 average in 37 at bats.
Wayne’s Jack LeStrange rounded out the first team ending the season with a .417 average and a .576 on base percentage for Wayne.
