Pembroke looks to continue perfect season, set up Top 5 battle

Northstar Christian (No. 3) and Pembroke (No. 4) both sit in the Top 5 in the NYSSWA Class C rankings, but must defeat streaking teams in Marcus Whitman and Avon to reach the finals. Here is the 2018 Section V Class C1 semi-final breakdown:

No. 1 seed NORTHSTAR CHRISTIAN (21-1/INDEPENDENT) vs. No. 5 seed MARCUS WHITMAN (19-3/FINGER LAKES WEST) Monday, Bloomfield HS 6:00 PM

How they got here: Northstar Christian flexed its offensive muscle, steamrolling No. 16 North Rose-Wolcott 89-24 and dispatching No. 8 East Rochester 99-69 to reach the semifinals.

Marcus Whitman handled Williamson in its opening game, winning. However, LeRoy provided a tougher opponent in the quarterfinals, battling Whitman to the wire before falling 54-53.

Last time they met: This will be the first matchup between the two teams this season.

Players to Watch for Northstar Christian: Miles Brown Jr. G 30.6 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 6.2 apg, Michael Brown 12.4 ppg, 6.4 apg Jr. G, Matthew Medeiros Sr. G 13.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg and Tray Roberts Sr. G 13.8 ppg, 4.1 rpg)

No. 2 seed PEMBROKE (22-0/GENESEE COUNTY DIVISION 1) vs. No. 6 seed AVON (16-6/LIVINGSTON COUNTY DIVISION 2) Monday, Warsaw HS 7:00 PM

How they got here: Pembroke showed no signs of slowing down, as they defeated No. 15 Holley 59-37 and cruising to a 67-58 win over No. 7 Gananda.

Avon played as expected to start the tournament, beating No.11 Byron-Bergen 66-43, but then surprised No. 3 Addison with a convincing 74-57 upset to earn a semifinal spot.

Last time they met: The two teams have yet to play this year.

Players to Watch for Pembroke: Reid Miano Sr. F 15 ppg, 8 rpg, Lucas Kohorst Sr. G/F 12 ppg, 6 rpg, Jamil Marable Sr. G 11 ppg, 5 rpg, 5 apg, Zach vonKramer Sr. F 10 ppg, 4 rpg and Ethan Stone Sr. F/C 8 ppg, 6 rpg.

Avon: Aaron Ghent Sr. F 14.0 ppg, 12.0 rpg, Ian Read Jr. G 8.0 ppg, Connor Taylor Jr. G 17.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg/6.0 apg and Nate Wojslaw Sr. F 7.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg.
