Cuba-Rushford playing role of spoiler in C2

The Class C2 tournament has gone almost as expected from a seeding point of view. Three of the top four seeds reached the semifinals, but Cuba-Rushford’s magical run has made them the party crasher in town. Here is the 2018 Section V Class C2 semi-final breakdown:

No. 1 seed PERRY (20-2/LIVINGSTON COUNTY DIVISION 3) vs. No. 4 seed C.G. FINNEY (17-5/INDEPENDENT) Monday, Bloomfield HS 8:15 PM

How they got here: Perry had little trouble reaching the semifinals, dispensing No. 17 Keshequa 72-40 and No. 8 Rochester Academy 67-45 in short order.

C.G. Finney showed an ability to win tight matchups en route to a semifinal appearance, winning over No. 13 Red Jacket 65-54 and holding off a tough No. 12 Geneseo 65-64.

Last time they met: The two teams have not played each other this season.

Players to Watch for Perry: Tyler Cowie Sr. G/F 27.0 ppg, Austin Croll Sr. G 17 ppg and Mike Hockey So. G 9.0 ppg.

C.G. Finney: Max Harris Sr. G, Keegan O’c0rr Jr. G and Xavier Smith Sr. G. 

Ky’Mere Meeks, Justin Smith and the Freshman Starting Five

Tony Arnold, Brennan Clark and the Sophomore Starting Five 
Robert Davis, Gerald Drumgoole and the Junior Starting Five
Thomas Jones III, Kailee White and the Senior Starting Five

No. 3 seed LYONS (19-3/WAYNE COUNTY) vs. No. 7 seed CUBA-RUSHFORD (13-8/ALLEGANY COUNTY) Monday, Bath-Haverling HS 7:00 PM

How they got here: Lyons proved exactly how they earned the No. 3 seed with convincing wins over No. 14 Rochester Prep (73-61) and No. 11 Warsaw (84-59).

Cuba-Rushford entered the tournament with middling expectations as the No. 7 seed, but quickly hit their stride with a 79-65 win over No. 10 South Seneca, setting up a matchup with No. 2 Caledonia-Mumford. Cuba then proceeded to shock Cal-Mum with a 68-61 win, holding on in the closing seconds to move on.

Last time they met: The game will mark the first matchup between the two teams this season.

Players to Watch for Lyons: Justice Smith Jr. G/F 22 ppg, 8 rpg, 6 apg and David Weaver Jr. G 13 ppg (hit 10 threes in one game this season).

Cuba-Rushford: Trevor Smith Sr. G 19.6 ppg.
