Canisius freshman Takal Molson was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on Monday after helping the Golden Griffins to two road victories at Marist and Saint Peter’s last weekend. This marks the third time in this calendar year where the Buffalo native has been honored as the conference’s top freshman performer.
Molson was good for 14.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game last week, highlighted by his double-double performance at Marist Feb. 2. In that win, he scored 21 points and grabbed 10 boards, while also dishing out three assists to go with two steals. In the road win over Saint Peter’s on Sunday, Molson scored eight points and pulled down a career-best 11 rebounds, as Canisius improved to 15-9 overall and 9-2 in MAAC play.
For the week, Molson shot 40.9 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from 3-point land while also connecting on 77.8 percent of his tries from the free-throw line. His double-double at Marist was his second of the season, making him the first Canisius freshman to record multiple double-doubles in MAAC play during his rookie season.
Molson ranks third on the team and second among all freshmen in the MAAC with his 13.0 points per game scoring average. In his first 11 career MAAC games, he is averaging 16.3 points per game, which is tops among all league newcomers and eighth-best overall. He has scored in double-figures nine times, which includes four games with 20-or more points.
Canisius, which has won 11 of its last 13 games dating back to Dec. 19, opens a three-game MAAC homestand Thursday when the team hosts Siena. Tipoff for the game is set for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 with the radio call available on Buffalo’s WECK 1230-AM and 102.9-FM, GoGriffs.com and the TUNEIN app.
