Turner’s career-high of 34 points not enough as Saint Peter’s suffers first home loss to Rider

JERSEY CITY, NJ – For the second consecutive game, Davauhnte Turner (Simsboro, LA/Independence CC/Gambling HS) topped his career-high in points, scoring 34 on Thursday night for the Saint Peter’s men’s basketball team. Despite the performance from Turner, the Peacocks suffered an 88-84 defeat to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) hOURglass Rival Rider University.

Turner’s 34 points for Saint Peter’s (8-10, 2-5 MAAC) came on 11-20 shooting from the field and 6-10 shooting from three. He also went a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe, helping him surpass his previous career-high of 22 points, which he set on Sunday at Niagara. Nick Griffin (Rockville, MD/George Washington/Col. Zadok Magruder) followed with 17 points, while Elijah Gonzales (Portland, OR/Clackamas) scored nine points and Quinn Taylor (Amarillo, TX/Tascosa) chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds. Nnamdi Enechionyia (Springfield, VA/Samford/St. James School) dished out a career-best eight assists to lead the Peacocks.

Dimencio Vaughn matched Turner, scoring a career-high 34 points of his own, for Rider (12-7, 5-2 MAAC). Tyere Marshall (15) and Jordan Allen (13) were the other two Broncs to score in double figures.

The Peacocks won the first half battle, outscoring the Broncs in the paint (20-14), on fast break points (8-0), on forced turnovers (9-4), and in points off of turnovers (16-4).  Saint Peter’s used a 6-0 run after Rider jumped out to an early lead, to go up 15-10. The Broncs regained the 16-15 lead and the Peacocks rallied off six 3-point shots over the course of the next five minutes, outscoring Rider 22-10, leading to a 37-26 lead. During the stretch, trifectas were logged by Turner, who connected on four, and Taylor and Samuel Idowu (Brooklyn, NY/Lafayette Educational Complex) each hit one. By the under four-minute media timeout, Turner had 16 points on 4-6 shooting from deep. At the half, Saint Peter’s held a 43-37 lead over Rider and Turner led the Peacocks with 18 points in 16 minutes.

The second half belonged to Rider as the Broncs outscored the Peacocks, 31-10 by the under eight-minute break, leading Saint Peter’s 68-53. The Peacocks quickly went on a 7-0 run after the break trailing 68-60. The two teams continued to exchange baskets until Rider went back up by 10 points, leading 75-65. Turner exploded for another quick five and a layup by Taylor helped get the Peacocks to within one possession at 75-72. Rider again went up by 10, but Saint Peter’s used multiple threes by Griffin and Turner added four more points, cutting the deficit to 84-82 with 42.3 seconds left. Stevie Jordan knocked in two from the line for Rider and a layup in transition helped secure the Broncs win over the Peacocks.

The loss at the Yanitelli Center was the first of the season for the team, dropping the Peacocks to 5-1 at home on the season and the defeat is the third straight for the squad after two losses in Western New York over the weekend.

The Peacocks will look to bounce back on Sunday, January 21, when the team remains in Jersey City for the second game of the two-game home stand, with a date against Manhattan at noon.
