WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth freshman guard Deion Hammond (Mitchellville, MD/Riverdale Baptist) has been named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, league officials announced Monday afternoon. Hammond scored 17 points, two shy of a career high, in Monmouth’s win over Manhattan on Friday night.
Hammond scored 17 points on 5-for-9 shooting, including three from deep. He was 4-of-5 from the foul line and contributed four rebounds in 26 minutes. The Mitchellville, MD native drilled a wing three to cap a 17-0 Monmouth run after the Hawks trailed by two, and later put MU up 16 with a three, forcing a Manhattan timeout with 4:06remaining. He has now scored in double figures in nine of 15 games to start his collegiate career, including five of the last six.
Hammond is Monmouth’s first Rookie of the Week since Micah Seaborn on February 22, 2016. He is the first true freshman to win the award since Josh James on December 2, 2013.
The Hawks are in Western New York this weekend and will play Niagara on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
