Butler’s Martin, Marquette’s Cain take Big East weekly honors

NEW YORK – Butler’s Kelan Martin has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week and Marquette’s Jamal Cain has been tabbed BIG EAST Freshman of the Week.  Martin led the Bulldogs to a 2-0 week, which included a win over No. 1 Villanova.  Cain averaged 12.5 points in a 1-1 week for the Golden Eagles.

BIG EAST Player of the Week
Kelan Martin, Butler, F, Sr. – Martin keyed a 2-0 week for the Bulldogs.  In a 91-89 double-overtime win at Georgetown, Martin tied the game with two free throws in the final minute and made the winning basket with three seconds left.  Martin finished with 27 points.  He followed that performance with a team-high 24 points and eight rebounds in a 101-93 victory over top-ranked Villanova.  He shot 4-of-4 from 3-point range.  For the two games, Martin averaged 25.5 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 53.1 percent from the field, 55.6 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the foul line.

BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Jamal Cain, Marquette, F, Fr. – Cain averaged 12.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals in a 1-1 week.  He had a collegiate-high 16 points in a 91-87 loss to Xavier.  In a 74-65 victory over Georgetown, Cain made 3-of-4 shots from the floor and finished with eight points.  For the two games, he shot 66.7 percent both from the floor and 3-point range.

BIG EAST Honor Roll
Martin Krampelj, Creighton, F, So.
Averaged 18.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week while shooting 57.1 percent from the field.  Had 23 points and 10 rebounds in a loss at Seton Hall (90-84).

Andrew Rowsey, Marquette, G, Sr.
Averaged 33.0 points and 2.5 steals in a 1-1 week.  Had 35 points in a victory versus Georgetown (74-65).  Shot 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from beyond the arc for the two games.

Desi Rodriguez, Seton Hall, F, Sr.
Scored 23 points in wins over Creighton (90-84) and St. John’s (75-70).  Also averaged 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals.

Jalen Brunson, Villanova, G, Jr.
Averaged 23.5 points and 5.0 assists in a 1-1 week.  Tied his career scoring high with 31 points in a 101-93 loss at Butler.

Trevon Bluiett, Xavier, G, Sr.
Averaged 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists in a 2-0 week.  Had 23 points and six rebounds in a win at Marquette (91-87).
