HOUSTON ASTROS 1
LOS ANGELES DODGERS 3
LOS ANGELES, CA– Justin Turner smacked a two-run home run to give the Dodgers the lead in their first World Series game since 1988. Clayton Kershaw pitched seven innings for the Dodgers, allowing one run on three hits while fanning 11 to earn the win. Brandon Morrow and Kenley Jansen held the Astros hitless and scoreless in the last two innings, adding one strikeout.
Turner, the NLCS MVP, now has four home runs and 14 RBI over three rounds this postseason. These totals are more than his previous playoff appearances combined. Kershaw has not lost a game in four starts so far this postseason. Chris Taylor opened the game with a home run, giving him the fourth game one, lead-off home run in World Series history. The last to accomplish the feat was Alcides Escobar in 2015.
Dallas Keuchel lasted six-and-two-thirds innings for the Astros, giving up three runs on six hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Keuchel is now 2-2 with 28 strikeouts in 24 innings pitched so far this postseason.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, with the score knotted at one run a piece, Keuchel got two quick groundouts to keep the Dodgers stifled. However, Taylor kept the inning alive by drawing a walk on five pitches. The walk brought Turner to the plate with a chance to do some damage. Turner wasted little time, despite falling behind 1-2 in the count, and struck the fourth pitch of the at bat, driving it 382 feet for a two-run home run.
The game lasted two hours and 28 minutes, which made it the fastest World Series game since the two hour and 21 minute game four of the 1992 series between the Toronto Blue Jays and Atlanta Braves.
Game two will be Wednesday at 8:09 p.m. in Los Angeles. The Astros are expected to start Justin Verlander and the Dodgers will counter with Rich Hill.
