NEW YORK YANKEES 0
HOUSTON ASTROS 7
HOUSTON, TX– Jose Altuve plated three runs on a pair of hits, including a solo home run helping the Astros force a game seven in the American League Championship Series. Justin Verlander tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits and one walk while fanning eight.
Altuve’s RBI and home run were his first of the series in either category, a far cry from his three home run, four RBI performance in the ALDS against the Boston Red Sox. Verlander extended his streak of scoreless innings in elimination games to 24 straight innings. Verlander has now started five elimination games in his career.
Chad Green pitched two-and-one-third hitless, scoreless innings for the Yankees, letting up one walk and striking out three.
George Springer, the Astros’ centerfielder, made a run-saving catch in the bottom of the seventh inning to maintain his team’s three-run lead. With one out in the inning, Todd Frazier stepped to the plate with runners on first and second base (Greg Bird had walked and Starlin Castro was hit by a pitch). After fouling off an opening curveball, Frazier jumped on a fastball and drove it to deep center. Springer sped back towards the wall, which had replaced the hill removed from centerfield prior to the season, and went to the apex of his leap to haul in the ball. The catch was the second out of the inning and allowed a ground out by Chase Headley to be the final out.
The ALCS will go to a gave seven for the first time since 2008, when the Tampa Bay Rays needed all seven to defeat the Boston Red Sox. The probable pitchers for game seven are unknown at this time.
