BOSTON RED SOX (0-1) 2
HOUSTON ASTROS (1-0) 8
HOUSTON, TX– Jose Altuve hit three home runs for the Astros, tying a postseason record for home runs in a single game. Altuve is the first player in Astros’ history and the first since Pablo Sandoval in 2012 to accomplish the feat. Justin Verlander pitched six innings for the Astros, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks, adding three strikeouts to earn the win. The game marked Verlander’s first postseason start away from the Detroit Tigers, where he had played since 2005 before being acquired at the trade deadline.
The Red Sox have not won a Division Series game since 2013 when they went on to take the World Series. The Red Sox defeated the Rays in the 2013 ALDS three games to one, capping off the series with a 3-1 win in game four. The Astros last played in the ALDS in 2015, falling three games to two to the eventual World Series champions, the Kansas City Royals.
NEW YORK YANKEES (0-1) 0
CLEVELAND INDIANS (1-0) 4
CLEVELAND, OH– Trevor Bauer fanned eight in six-and-two-thirds scoreless innings for the Indians, giving up two hits and one walk. Bauer lost a no-hit bid after five-and-one-third innings. Jay Bruce led the Indians offensively, driving in three runs on two hits, including a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Bruce now has three home runs and nine RBI in 11 career playoff games.
Jaime Garcia threw two-and-two-thirds innings in relief for the Yankees, striking out three and walking two. Garcia is one of a handful of Yankees who have previously won a World Series title, having captured the 2011 championship with current teammate Matt Holliday and the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Indians swept the Red Sox in last season’s Division Series, going on to represent the American League in the World Series and losing in seven games to the Chicago Cubs. The Yankees last won an ALDS game in 2012, winning a decisive game five, 3-1 over the Baltimore Orioles.
