PGGCBL Playoff Roundup: Second round set, Mohawks’ combo strikes and Pioneers shoot down Red Wings’ hopes

ALBANY DUTCHMEN (0-1) 3
ALBANY, NY– Sophomore Russ Olive (University of Masschusetts-Lowell) drove in three runs, and the DiamondDawgs moved on to meet the Amsterdam Mohawks in the second round of the playoffs. Junior Jack Fossand (Dartmouth College) allowed one unearned run and three hits with five strikeouts in two-and-two-thirds innings for the DiamondDawgs. Nick Caregnato (N.C. Central) struck out three over a scoreless inning and a third to pick up the win. Zach Vennaro (Mount Olive/Monroe C.C.) struck out three and hurled two shutout innings for the save. Redshirt freshman Greg Marino (Stony Brook University) fanned five and gave up one run on two hits and four walks in six innings for the Dutchmen.

AMSTERDAM MOHAWKS (1-0) 6
AMSTERDAM, NY– Sophomore Dan Maynard (University of Maryland) and freshman Dustin Skelton (Mississippi State) went 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Mohawks, who go on to the second round with a seven-game winning streak. Freshman Joe LaSorsa (St. John’s University) let up three runs on six hits and one walk, setting down six by strikeout for the Mohawks. Freshman Nick Massa (Manhattan University) surrendered four runs (three earned) and eight hits, striking out four in five-and-two-thirds innings for the Stallions.

JAMESTOWN JAMMERS (1-0) 3    in 11
JAMESTOWN, NY– Junior John Conti (Canisius College) delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th for the Jammers fourth consecutive win, moving them on to the second round. Sophomore David Lyskawa (Niagara County Community College) let up two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out two for the Jammers. Freshman Ryan Marketell (Monroe Community College/Webster Thomas) pitched one inning in relief for the Flames, giving up two hits.

ELMIRA PIONEERS (1-0) 12
GENEVA RED WINGS (0-1) 2
GENEVA, NY– Sophomore Troy Dixon (Samford University) knocked in three runs on three hits to send the Pioneers on to the second round. Freshman Houston Roth (Ole Miss) fanned 11 over five innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks for Pioneers.
