HORNELL — Livonia native Reid VanScoter tossed a five-hit shutout as the Hornell Dodgers swept the 2017 New York Collegiate Baseball League Championship Series. The left-hander set down six on strikes and walked just two batters. The 2017 New York State Class B High School Player of the Year hurled 108 pitches – 71 for strikes.

After allowing a pair of two-out hits in the third and wiggling out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth, VanScoter retired the last 14 batters he faced. The Binghamton University commit put an exclamation point on his outing as he struck out the side in the ninth.

Sam Mang finished with two hits including a run-scoring double in the fifth that jump-started their offense. Andrew McCoy added a single in the fifth that plated two as the Dodgers tacked on three runs that inning. Edison Mercado and Rocco Leone each finished with two hits apiece for the Spartans.

Hornell, the oldest franchise in NYCBL history having been in existence since 1994, won its seventh league post-season title and first since 2014.

The Spartans finished their first year in existence.
