Michael Conforto and Aaron Judge launched a pair of home runs further than 440 feet in their victories. The Cubs and Pirates stayed scorching hot while Milwaukee continues to free fall. Out west, Alex Wood finally appeared to be human as Atlanta crushed the Dodgers.
St. Louis Cardinals (47-49)
11 Chicago Cubs (49-46) 4
CHICAGO- Both starting pitchers allowed two earned runs through six innings, but the Cards used a nine-run eighth inning to jump out in front. Carl Edwards Jr. (3-2) suffered the loss as the Cubs used three pitchers in that eighth inning before recording an out.
Houston Astros (64-32) 8
Baltimore Orioles (46-50) 7
BALTIMORE- Just like last Friday, the O’s dramatic comeback attempt landed just short. Trailing 8-2 going into the ninth, Jonathan Schoop’s 20th HR of the year pulled them within a run, but the Astros were able to hold on for the win.
Milwaukee Brewers (52-47) 1
Philadelphia Phillies (33-61) 6
PHILADELPHIA- Aaron Nola delivered his sixth straight quality start for the Phillies. He lasted seven innings, allowing one earned run and striking out nine as he improved to 7-6 on the year. The Brewers have lost six straight.
Toronto Blue Jays (44-52) 3
Cleveland Indians (49-45) 13
CLEVELAND- Already leading 5-3, the Indians used an eight-run seventh inning to pull away from Toronto in this one. Edwin Encarnacion provided most of the pop tonight, going deep and driving in four runs for the first place Tribe.
Miami Marlins (43-51) 3
Cincinnati Reds (40-56) 1
CINCINNATI- The two runs Miami scored in the top of the first proved to be all they’d need as Jose Urena took care of the rest. He went six innings, allowing one run and improving to 8-4 this year.
Texas Rangers (46-50) 4, 10 innings
Tampa Bay Rays (51-46) 3
TAMPA BAY- Tied at three after nine innings, all six runs in this game had come via five dingers. However, the game winning hit by Elvis Andrus in the tenth didn’t leave the ballpark, or the infield for that matter as Delino DeShields scored the game-winning run on the infield single. Yu Darvish went eight and struck out 12 in the no-decision.
Oakland Athletics (43-53) 5
New York Mets (44-50) 7
QUEENS- Michael Conforto provided the pop last night for the Mets. He went deep twice, including a 450-footer to the Shea Bridge. With the bullpen struggling, former Athletic Jerry Blevins came in for New York and pitched the last inning and 2/3 en route to his first save this season.
Detroit Tigers (44-51) 6
Minnesota Twins (48-47) 3
MINNEAPOLIS- Ervin Santana (11-7) wasn’t his usual self last night. He failed to make it through the fourth inning before allowing five runs and taking his team out of this game. Victor Martinez went deep twice in the win for Detroit.
Chicago White Sox (38-55) 6
Kansas City Royals (48-47) 7, 10 innings
KANSAS CITY- Tyler Clippard’s immense struggles continued last night. He loaded the bases for KC in the tenth and recorded just one out, a walk-off sacrifice fly by Whit Merrifield. Yoan Moncada hit his first career triple and knocked in four for the Sox, while Mike Moustakas hit his 26th round tripper for the Royals.
Pittsburgh Pirates (49-48) 13
Colorado Rockies (56-42) 5
DENVER- Don’t look now, but the Pirates have won six straight. Pittsburgh scored in seven of nine innings and received excellent production from the heart of their order. Their 3-5 hitters combined to go 8 for 13 with nine RBI in the win.
New York AL (50-45) 5
Seattle Mariners (48-50) 1
SEATTLE- The Judge accounted for four of the Yankees’ five runs, including a mammoth 440 foot home run to the upper deck in left. CC Sabathia (9-3) continues to impress this year, as his ERA dropped to 3.44 after six innings of one-run ball.
Washington Nationals (57-38) 5
Arizona Diamondbacks (56-40) 6
PHOENIX- As good as the Nationals are, they still can’t seem to fix the worst bullpen in baseball. Back-to-back-to-back homers for Arizona to start the game put the Nats in a hole, but things were tied at five going to the bottom of the ninth. Brandon Drury delivered with a walk-off single to give Arizona the win.
Boston Red Sox (55-43) 6
Los Angeles Angels (47-51) 2
ANAHEIM- Five runs in the first proved to be more the enough for the Red Sox last night. Chris Sale (12-4) went six scoreless and struck out nine in the win. With those nine Ks he joins Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez as the only pitchers in MLB history to reach 200 strikeouts in 20 or less games.
Atlanta Braves (47-48) 12
Los Angeles Dodgers (66-31) 3
LOS ANGELES- Thursday night, it was rumored that Jaime Garcia was traded by the Braves to Minnesota. Last night, he handed Alex Wood (11-1) his first loss of the year. Not only did Garcia (4-7) out pitch Wood, but he added a grand slam off him for his third career homer.
San Diego Padres (42-54) 12, 11 innings
San Francisco Giants (37-61) 9
SAN FRANCISCO- Both teams showed a lot of fight in this one. After leading 6-2 early, the Giants entered the ninth trailing 9-6. Padre Closer Brandon Maurer retired the first two hitters he faced, then Buster Posey got things started. He walked, Brandon Crawford doubled him home, and then as the tying run, Connor Gillaspie hit a two-run homer to send this one to extras. The valiant effort by San Fran would go unnoticed though, as San Diego secured the victory with three runs of their own in the top of the 11th.
