Class AA semi-final preview: Will the upsets continue?

No. 2 seed Fairport and No. 6 seed Rush-Henrietta split a pair of games this season and finished tied atop the Monroe County Division-1 standings. They meet Wednesday night in the Class AA semi-finals. (Photo: SUE KANE)

No. 5 seed McQuaid will play No. 8 seed Victor while No. 2 seed Fairport is set to face No. 6 seed Rush-Henrietta. On the line will be the two spots in the Class AA final.

No. 5 seed McQuaid (14-5)  vs. No. 8 seed Victor (13-9)

Wednesday at Dwyer Stadium at 4:30 p.m.

Players to Watch:

MCQUAID- Tyler Cyrus (Sr. DH/1B .341, 12RBI), Erik Johnson (Jr. LHP 28.1 IP, 2.71 ERA, 18K, 7BB, 2-2), Billy Kehrig (Sr. OF .396, 19 RBI, 13R, 2-2B, 2-3B, .609 avg w/RISP) and Hunter Walsh (So. RHP 2.30 ERA, 27.1IP, 21K, 9BB, 3-0, 2SV).

VICTOR- Chris Varone (.354, 23 H, 9 RBI), Santino Rosso (.346, 18 H, 10 RBI), Blake Hildman (.317, 19 H, 11 RBI), Owen Delforte (.315, 17 H, 11 RBI), Tommy Ryan (.306, 19 H, 10 RBI), Andrew Westbrook (31.1 innings, 3-4, 3.80 ERA, 20 K) and Brandon Meeks (16 innings, 1-0, 1.75 ERA, 16 K).

How they got here:

McQuaid defeated Gates-Chili, 13-3 in the opening round before knocking off No. 4 seed Webster Thomas, 3-2 in the quarter-finals. Victor downed No. 9 seed Hilton, 10-4 in the opening round before stunning No. 1 seed Webster Schroeder, 3-2 to advance.

Previous meeting: This will be the the first meeting this season between the two teams.

What to Know: McQuaid has won six straight and eight of nine. The Jesuit Knights have not lost to a Section Five team this season. McQuaid took the 2015 AA crown.

Victor has won six straight. The Blue Devils claimed the 2014 AA title.

FAIRPORT- Mike Sabatine (.424, 25 H, 20 R, 7 RBI, 11 SB), Omar Rosa (.408, 20 H, 16 R, 18RBI, 6 SB), Evan Newkirk (.426, 20  H, 12  R, 15  RBI, 6 SB), Tyler Smith (1.50 ERA, 5-0, 25 K, 7 BB), Jake Schuler (1.85 ERA, 2-2, 13  K, 9 BB) and Trevor Povlock (2.70 ERA, 2-1, 34  K, 20 BB).

RUSH-HENRIETTA- Lucas Haefner (Jr. RHP, 3-1, 22IP, 14K/.365, 14RBI, 19R), Zach Harter (Sr. 1B .429, 18R, 26RBI, 13XBH), Mitch Hoffower (Sr. LHP 4-2, 2.43 ERA, 31IP, 27K, 7BB) and Casimer Sobaszek (Sr. SS/RHP .357, 12R, 10RBI, 8XBH).

How they got here:

Fairport, ranked No. 19 NYS Class AA, defeated No. 7 seed Franklin, 11-3 in the quarter-finals.

Rush-Henrietta edged No. 11 seed Churchville-Chili, 3-2 in the opening round and toppled second-seeded Penfield, ranked No. 16 NYS Class AA, 4-3 to advance to the semi-finals.

Previous meetings: The teams split two games this season with R-H winning 6-3 on May 3rd, and Fairport taking a 4-3 decision the following day.

What to Know:

Fairport has won three straight and seven of eight. The Red Raiders took the AAA title in 2013. R-H fell to McQuaid in the 2015 championship game. The Royal Comets last claimed a sectional title in 1990.
